NFL Lockout

If it's so popular in this country / worldwide, how come the European league folded after about 5 years?

More than that, and because they're concentrating on the NFL Europe games at Wembley, also I don't think everyone was happy we were just getting the dregs. Theres a lot of Newcastle fans, but if we played in League 2 i'm sure 50000 wouldn't turn up for example

Eh? So because they play one game occasionally at Wembley it means there's not enough support for a European league? And that proves it's a popular sport in Europe does it? Erm, aye that makes sense. Also, if it was as popular as you suggest, wouldn't there be enough European players coming through the ranks in order to make up for the fact we only got the 'dregs'? The reason we only got shit US players is because no one plays it in this country or Europe as a whole. And don't say it's a young sport either because it's been on telly here since the early 80s.

Was more popular in the 80s than it is now.

As Alex says, each to their own. There's a few sports I loved playing but couldn't be arsed to watch as a spectator, rugby being one of them, but Christ, American football? I actually seen two 'black dudes' as ToughGuy would say down the coast on sunday chucking a egg shaped ball at each other, Once I heard them talk it was obvious they were Sherman Tanks. The thing is, if you get one or two people, you can have a laugh playing football, World Cup/Three pots in or just cross in for someone to header or volley it past a keeper. All the Yanks can do is throw the ball to each other and catch it. Fucking great fun that, like. TOUCHDOWN!!

More Americans play association football than English people mind . We used to take an American Football to school, and everyone wanted in when we did. It's genuinely fun "just throwing it about". Not as fun as Heads and Volleys or anything, but I never said once that I preferred American Football over regular football... just some rugby fans on here proving what I first said about rugby. "OMG e's tlkin aboot a sp0rt dat isnt rugby lets tlk aboot rugby anyway its soooo superior"

That must've been Alex's patter that, sticks out a mile, to be honest.

30 years does make it young tbf. Not many Europeans came through because Rome wasn't built in a day, I don't know enough English people with the physical strength to do it, and who really thinks they can make the NFL/NFL Europa growing up? I've loved the sport for years, but theres no youth structure for me to go up! The leagues over here are for adults, meaning we need a stronger youth system to do it. Slowly we're learning that not only British sports are fun to play (Basketballs becoming a bit popular over here with young' uns and a Brit plays for the Bulls) but it won't be done overnight. Once all stupid "only play our sports" views are eradicated we'll have more chance of bringing through our own stars, and maybe NFL Europa can start on an even playing field

Yes, youths can't fund a youth system can they? I know loads of youths who like it, how do you expect them to do anything about it? When we're older we could fund it, but right now theres no chance. Also, whoever said the irony is even Americans think its shit, even if that was true, its not ironic

Noone said anything about it becoming massive. But it does) rugby isnt in the top 10 in the world, with American Football 10th

"mostpopularsports.net"

1. Soccer (more popularly known as Football in many regions) is a team sport that is popular in almost every country in the world. The huge fan following is perhaps due to the fact that at an amateur level, it requires very little equipment and effort to learn the basics.

Nothing to do that is more of an artform than a sport you disrespectful yank pricks. The arrogance of that sentence should astound me, but knowing how much that country needs nuking, it doesn't.

Not really worth arguing about like but if there isn't a youth system there's absolutely no proof (beyond anecdotal stuff you mention, which I take with a hefty pinch of salt tbh) to back up your suggestion it's popular with young people in this country (as a participation sport). I could just as easily counter by saying I've rarely seen any kids playing it. Very rarely in fact.

Not enough strength. I would lay every penny I've got on an English professional rugby team, kicking an AF team all over in a fight. Rugby players don't need helmets.

I don't think thats enough. Rugby is more generalist, you need a bit of everything. Wide Receivers in American Football need to be really fast, guards really huge (like huger than rugby players and stronger, but not as fast as them) etc etc. American football is specialist, and the strongest players and stronger than the strongest rugby players. These "crash helmets" and they still have all these problems on retiring due to the massive hits.

Thing is, the superbowl is a typically American bullshitted event with bells, whistles and pop stars playing sets through the many stoppages, it's the World cup final for Americans, I bet half the fuckers that watch it even over there couldn't give a monkeys fuck for the actual game, it's just an event, like non- horse racing fans watching the Grand National over here.

As an aside, Stevie Black went over to America years ago and studied some of the fitness stuff in American Football and it was light years ahead of over here at the time. He also said (not sure I believe it like) that there were something like 6 people playing in the NFL at the time who were quicker than the Olympic 100m champion. There approach is incredibly scientific and they throw a load of money at it too. Different argument like, just saying.

Point, although it does get similar world wide viewers with the Champions League Final, so you have to give it some credit for what it gets
