Defence begins with attack.

The attack can't start without the ball though, a poor defence tends to mean you're on the defensive for a lot of the game as they are poor at winning the ball and distributing the ball if they do win it which means rather than initiating our own attacks they give the opposition the ball back again to launch another attack.

Think you're getting mixed up with attack is the best form of defence tbh, which while true is again predicated on having a defence capable of winning and the distributing the ball. To outscore the goals we leak we'd have to be one of the best attacks in the league.

If we had someone putting the ball in the net regularly, the problems at the back would be much less of an issue.

Keep a clean sheet, you can't lose. That, sir, is irrefutable.

We've scored as many as Stoke (who nobody are calling toothless up front), yet only Sunderland and Norwich have conceded more.

Last year (2014/15) QPR and Hull were both relegated despite there being 3 clubs who scored less than them. QPR scored 14 more goals than Burnley, but because they conceded an additional 20, Burnley finished ahead of the them in 19th.

2013/14 the 3 teams with the worst defence were relegated, Fulham scored more than 6 teams (40GF), but had the worst defence (85 GA) and ended the season in 19th.

2012/13 Wigan scored as many goals as the team that finished 11th (Swansea with 47GF) , they conceded the most (73GA) and finished 3points adrift of sunderland who scored 6 fewer goals.

2011/12 Blackburn had the joint 9th best attack in the league (48GF) and they were relegated with Bolton and Wolves. The three teams with the worst defensive record were relegated again.

Hope that clears things up for you. :good:

Comparing overall records is all good and well but we are different team away from home. Absolutely spineless both in attack and defence.

Absolutely. At home we have the seventh best goal scoring record in the league and the third best defensive record in the bottom half of the table but that all goes to shit away from home.

I honestly believe good away form is predicated on a good defence first and foremost. Frustrate the opposition, draw them out and hit them on the break, or simply grind out a 0-0. If the attacking players can rely on the defence not fucking up, any good work they do up front is gravy. It's not exciting, but it's effective.

I have to say that constantly getting humped away is also getting to be a bit boring now too.

Barely registers if I'm honest. Once the 2nd went in at Chelsea I spent most of the match betting on Chelsea to score next, or for there to be a penalty.

This from todays Chronicle

Fabricio Coloccini - who hasn’t featured for the club since mid-February - has insisted “of course” he is committed to United for the future, though the Magpies skipper failed to confirm if he will stay if the club are relegated.

Will he really be missed at this point? Still probably a pretty classy defender in the Championship.

We've looked better with Lascelles and Mbemba in recent games than we have with him for a few years now. by many accounts hes got a shite attitude as well, he can fuck off.

Well Taylor won't be offered a new contract so he'll be gone and I doubt we can keep Mbemba which means we only have Colo and Lascellas on the books next year

Defensively we have to get it right next year, we have a lot more games. The board need to realise that we will get injuries/suspensions and that depth is very important

At no point in our 'promotion race' should we have a makeshift back four

Fully agree with that. It's utterly laughable that we've had a makeshift back four for a good amount of this season considering what a shit show the defence has been in the two seasons before this one, how on Earth we didn't buy more than 1 defender in the two windows is fucking mental.

It has really cost us this season, as we've outscored Palace, Watford, and West Brom, and we're equal on goals with Stoke, meanwhile we're joint 2nd worst for goals conceded.

It's nothing short of suicidal tbh. At times last year our back four was

Colback- Willo - Janmaat - Jonas

Graham Carr has been in the job for over 5 years, he must know that Colo, Dummett and Haidara are all injury prone

When we went down last time we had depth in defence in case of injuries, the worst part is when we go down this time I don't think he'll well go out and buy the sufficient players we need

In February next year we'll be playing some shit winger at left back cos Dummett and Haidara are crocked

Useless bastards

Didn't somebody on here say they had an in-the-know mate who said he's not popular at all with the rest of the squad? Would love to know what's gone on behind the scenes with him over the last few years - ever since that carry on with his missus going back to Argentina and then his fatha trying to engineer him a move back to Cordoba or wherever it was, he's been an odd case. Add to that the rumours about him being influential in getting Ben Arfa hoyed out, there's a lot more to his time here than meets the eye. This last absence has been highly suspicious as well. Pity cos for those couple of years after we went down he was a proper Rolls Royce defender.
