ewerk 30431
From September 2010. Re-branding of St James' Park is given the go ahead Three advertising boards will be erected on the outside of the Milburn Stand with another three fixed to the outside of the building at the Gallowgate End after the club yesterday won planning permission for the boards.PLANS to re-brand the home of Newcastle United have been given the go ahead. Executives at the football club announced in November last year that they were planning to sell the naming rights to the club as part of a commercial move to increase turnover by finding new forms of revenue. Executives at the club said they wanted to offer businesses the chance to be associated with the stadium in the same way airline Emirates is connected with Arsenal’s ground or Reebok is with Bolton’s stadium. However the move provoked a huge outcry from fans who claimed the decision was another snub aimed at them by club owner Mike Ashley. Yesterday, Newcastle City Council’s Development Control Committee gave the green light for the signs to be put in place. Normally planning applications for advertising boards are approved by council employees behind closed doors. But due to the large number of objections council officials decided to hear the application in public. More than 23,700 people signed a petition against the move with some objectors writing from as far away as Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. One of those who attended to voice their objection was Bill Cochrane, a committee member of the Newcastle United Supporters Association. He argued that the signs would detract from the surrounding neighbourhood, part of which is in a conservation area. He said: “These signs can not have a positive impact on conservation of the area. St James’ Park has been described as sitting on the top of a hill overlooking a city in the same way as the Parthenon. “They don’t allow advertising on the side of the Parthenon and it shouldn’t be allowed on the side of St James’ Park. “Those signs make it look like some sort of sports store inside a shopping mall.” Mr Cochrane also argued that the renaming of the stadium and the signs could to be ammunition for visiting supporters. He said: “People are going to come here and mock us. “This thing destroys the credibility of the city.” Two signs will be attached to the Milburn Stand measuring 8m by 4m with a third sign measuring 22m by 2.5m. The Gallowgate stand will see two signs also 8mby 4m and a large pictorial banner measuring 9.2m x 16.5m. Steven Burn, speaking on behalf of the club, said: “We are not changing the name of St James’ Park. “We are trying to attract new commercial partners. There are many stadiums throughout the country which do this sort of thing.”

Dolly Potter MD 0
Or that space... Is there a phobia about open spaces? I reckon MA just doesnt like empty walls. Bet his house is full of shite across his walls He's not exactly a stranger when it comes to defacing the aesthetics of a well known & classy landmark, for a quick pound or two. On a sidenote Ashley has been riding the coat tails & the exemplary work put in by the previous custodians of another institution for years, hiding behind the tagline of 'the best sports shop in the world', while dropping standards/quality of products/service etc. Newcastle United = Lillywhites Mach 2.
