I think we'll sell somebody important with Europa league but the scales will tip the other way if we get the Champions League.

Ashley will sell if the price is right, that won't change based on European qualifications. Qualifying for the champions league would result in more money on incoming players and would also be used to improve and extend existing players contracts.

They are kind of missing the point. The reason we bought good young players was for the very reason that we wont make a loss on them should we come to sell them

The point the article's making is that having CL will help us keep players we'd otherwise be likely to sell if a large offer came ... players that have been the backbone of our great season regardless of their age ... and would be VERY difficult to replace given the amount we now spend on recruitment.

pathetic conclusion and I wholeheartedly disagree. Yet another one of those tapping up articles, now framed in the manner that if we cant get into the CL - players will go

They even have the nerve to suggest teams like Tottenham and Chelsea have no problems missing out on CL while we cant.

Our entire team is either here from the days of Championship fotball or signed with a top-10 finish in mind. Expectations gets adjusted along the way but to suggest we will lose players if we dont get the CL is just lunacy. Not one in our team expected that, even EL was a pipedream.

Our foundations are now built around PL income and PL income only, we dont NEED European fotball to finance our wages. Neither does tottenham or Chelsea but their wages are considerably higher, their ground houses 15.000 less and they are below us in the league.

Players might get sold, but if they do it will be because silly offers come in regardless of if we get CL or EL - not because they are unhappy. I actually think Ashley might have a problem convincing them to leave the way things are at the moment

We are being monitored because we do well, yeah no shit sherlock - but players of the quality we currently have are going to perform regardless, so no news there.

In short, go fuck yourselves guardian, horrible article.

Valid point that we need CL or our players will fuck off. Its a point, but its not valid. Everyone and their grandfathers, even Leazesmag, can see us build something here. To suggest we will have a case of rats fleeing the ship is ludicrous.

We dont need CL, its that simple.

We'd have made a loss last year were it not for the Carroll sale.

Champions league would have a huge impact on what kind of offers we can afford to knock back, without anyone necessarily becoming priceless.

It would also test Ba's priorities in terms of cash over competition, the only top performer we can't hold to their contract irrespective of offers.

Just the cash money from our league position this year will probably see us into the greens... thing is our CL-dream might be wiffed out by the start of august - there are very good teams in the qualifying stages as well. We wont make much money if we get knocked out straight away, would need a few group stages wins at least for it to actually matter.

Regarding what kind of offers we would knock back, Im not sure its linked to CL/EL at all. If we get a fat offer from a oil/rubles club, we will sell its as simple as.

Im fine with that, well Im not but Ive come to terms with it.

Interesting viewpoint. There will be interest, that's for certain - and I don't think that would change too much whether or not we qualify.

Who of note did Villa lose? Gareth Barry?

Also Young, Downing and Milner.

As I said yesterday, we will still sell if we get in another silly £35m bid for one of our players but being in the CL will enable us to knock back small time offers like £23m for Tiote.

It's an incredibly simple article that makes an incredibly simple and valid point. I don't know why people are getting emotional about it.

I bet you the journo is a fan of Spurs or Chelsea and he has been racking his brain all Sunday thinking about how to reverse some of the pressure onto us. It's logical but not that logical as the likes of Ba, Tiote, Krul, Cabaye etc were already coveted and are not more so because we might nick 4th instead of 5th. It's all about taking sides in the mind games at this point.

Do you really think a small time article in the Guardian is gonna have any bearing on our players' psyches leading into these last few games though. If even one of them reads that article I'll be very surprised.

True but why do managers say things in the press? Because other managers read the papers, not sure end of season mind games is about the players. Fair point though, would be inclined to think the journo was being a twat if they are spurs or Chelsea.

He'd wanna have some ego on him to think he was playing his part in the end of season mind games with that piece. Although I'm sure plenty of them do. I actually hadn't given much thought to journalists getting in on the mind games, but you're right like, they're well placed to have a dabble if their allegiances are in the right (wrong) place.

When Lyon were winning the French league year in year out before the recent demise each player on their team had a value and if that value was met they were sold on no matter what. What kept them winning the league was that they reinvested the money wisely and bought replacements who were as good if not better than those who left. In a way I think we're trying to do something similar at the moment. If an offer of over 20 million comes in for Tiote he's gone, (providing the offer is from a team he wants to join of course) so we'll just have to live with that scenario and hope that the replacements we get are good enough.

Getting into the CL would only prevent this from happening temporarily (at best) unless we could do it year in year out which these days is extraordinarily difficult. Spurs have been trying (and spending a lot of money along the way) for years and have one solitary Champions league qualification to show for it and if they fail to do so this season will lose at least one of their star players.
