My expectations are that we will be stronger at the start of next season than we were at the end of last season.

Just getting rid of Campbell/Kuqi was enough to grant that wish

;)

Then I will sleep happy.

Night Night all. :)

feminists ffs ;)

Its being a long and winding road with plenty of self inflicted pot holes along the way........BUT....Could we finally be about to witness the same dramatic turnaround on the pitch that we have seen off it.

Cabaye, Gameiro, Gervinho......all good footballers that I have never heard of ;) but listening to others points of view, good none the less.

These are not the league 1 donkeys that the naysayers promised. These are not the Carlton Coles. No these by all accounts are some of the cream of Europe that according to many reports, we are trying desperately to sign.

A line has been drawn.

Gone are the days of a club throwing away good money on over the hill journeymen. Gone are the deals for the boys. Instead we have a club that is filling its youth larder with tomorrows stars and trying to bring current stars into the first team.

What more can we ask?

Of course, there is the little matter of paper and ink, but lets not let that get in the way of glorious vision, a turning point, a new beginning.

For it is foretold that Newcastle will once again rise from the darkness and weave its magic throughout Englands green pastures.

So one signed, one was never on the cards and one unsure........More signings on the way and four offers on the table and today Cabaye said....

YOHAN CABAYE has revealed his arrival at Newcastle will spark an influx of new stars.

“I am going to play in the best championship in the world for a club who want to get back into Europe within a year and one who are building an ambitious team,” said Yohan Cabaye, signed from French champions Lille for £5million.

“I am the first recruit but I have discussed things with manager Alan Pardew and I know others will follow. The directors have assured me on this point.”

Cabaye, 24, and capped four times by France, has given up the chance of playing Champions League football with Lille to join Newcastle.

He added: “I spoke to Charles N’Zogbia and he told me I had made a good choice.”

So there we have it, a great first signing, and influx of stars to follow and europe within a year........Yes please. ;)

Well to be fair, I never knew the Directors had actually "assured" him on this point. We know they'd never mislead or lie to anyone so we can breathe easy now......so.......I also presume they "assured" him that the quality of the players and their affect on the team would enhance us and not make us weaker and that we'd keep a hold of our better players. Why do I not feel so "assured" as Cabaye. (first day in the job, every company seems great etc).

In all honesty - in this instance - it's still a stupid prediction even if it happens.

I think the England thing has been their downfall but their run in is a piece of piss - don't be surprised if they take fourth.

I don't believe that's the whole story, but I think it is a factor. I reckon there's an agreement for 'Arry to join England at the end of the season, he's told the players and (as they would if they knew he was off to any other club job) they aren't as bothered about working their arse off for him any more.

I think it's got a lot to do with the reliance on his patented "Go out their and play" style of management, good morale and whatnot can only get you so far. You need tactical astuteness, something I think Redknapp lacks. That said, the staggering fall in form since Capello's departure and the stories about Redkapp's England future, can't be ignored and neither can the two stories be entirely unrelated.

Aren't they doing better than last season with 4 games to go? The argument basically is captured by your last sentence, exactly what Hansen said on Motd. The events are related but that doesnt have to mean causality. The Fink Tank analysis of Spurs shows their current form being a natural downswing to compensate for overachievement according to their performance ranking. Statistically, you'd have predicted this turn in form anyway. Just seems easy to say its the England thing, its as likely to be poor squad management, fatigue and complacency. And a natural down turn in form.

It's a game of fime margins - there may be a few of them, Modric, Bale, VDV, Adebayor thinking they might not be there next season if H isn't there. Hard to produce your best if you are not completeley committed.

On a 'Arry not really that good note I quite liked this prescient rant http://oneinthehole.wordpress.com/2011/08/29/why-harry-redknapp-is-no-longer-the-manager-to-take-spurs-forward/

Whatever the explanation, they can go and fuck themselves.

 This. Our form has bound to have rattled them a bit as well tbh. Arsenal leapfrogged them then Chelsea and ourselves soon snapped at their heels, our form keeps going, Redknapp could be away, the players seem to know it. If it's one of them or all of them, I don't care, it's giving us a chance to be a CL side.

Inj at key points to VDV (which he hasn't recovered form from) and Lennon are the main part of the puzzle....That and Harry tinkering with the side continually. The CB's have always been suspect and aging and slow. Spurs have played a lot of games and lastly it looks to me like Adebayor eased off the last couple of months (for whatever reason). They haven't got that much behind the first choice 11. Personally think the Eng thing was a coincidence and might if anything have been only a minor distraction.

VDV and Bale were winning them games single handed and Modric don't score much. Harry isn't tactically that sound so once the mirror broke he wasn't sure which pieces to pick up.

From The Guardian's 'Five Things We Learnt From The PL This Weekend':

Newcastle need Champions League football more than you think

There are many reasons to hate modern football which are not worth going over again. But chief among them is the knowledge that whenever a club outstrips expectations and has a run at shaking up the big-money hegemony in the Premier League, the players who have made it possible will be bought up by the wealthy clubs that are threatened. Aston Villa fans know this only too well, having seen their club get this close to the Champions League twice before losing half the team that got them there.

So this is why for Newcastle, making it into the Champions League is more important than any of the teams for whom it would be deemed a disaster if they did not. Arsenal, Chelsea and, to a lesser extent, Spurs have the resources and infrastructure to survive a season without top-four football. Arsenal may have sold some of their best players but the club does not have an owner who you think would be only too happy to quit while he is ahead and cash in his chips. In Mike Ashley the suspicion is that Newcastle have such a figure and, despite the success so far this season, he is still viewed warily by many fans.

Watching Newcastle was a delight against Stoke. Their passing was crisp and their movement in all areas was exquisite. Their midfield is as strong as any around. Yohan Cabaye (whose pass to create the first goal was better than his strike for his second – and that was sublime), Hatem Ben Arfa and Cheik Tioté have an average age of just over 25. Danny Guthrie, a very good central midfielder himself, cannot get a look in. In Demba Ba and Papiss Cissé they have an attack that delivers as often as it excites. Unfortunately they are all at an age that makes them extremely saleable. Which is why there will be a glut of offers in the summer unless they earn the right to enter Europe's exclusive club themselves and then shut and bolt the door behind them. GR

Interesting viewpoint. There will be interest, that's for certain - and I don't think that would change too much whether or not we qualify.

Who of note did Villa lose? Gareth Barry?
