Arsène Wenger wants to sign Lille's Ivory Coast striker Gervinho this summer but he faces competition from Liverpool. The Arsenal manager is a long-term admirer of Gervinho and he has placed him prominently on his list of targets.

 

Wenger has said that "for the first time in a while, I will be very active" on the transfer market yet the deal for Gervinho could hinge on his ability to sell Andrey Arshavin.

 

He is open to offers for the Russia forward, who has been a disappointment this season, and he would like to swell his transfer kitty by recouping the £15m that the club paid for him in the winter window of 2009.

 

Gervinho, 24, has made it clear that he wants to play Champions League football next season, which he would be able to do if he stayed at Lille, who have won the French title for the first time since 1954.

 

But the prospect of a move to the Premier League appeals, with Liverpool also an attractive option. Gervinho intends to make a firm decision on his future after Ivory Coast's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin on 5 June.

Lille attacker Gervinho has already decided where his future lies but will not make an announcement until next month.

 

Gervinho has had an excellent campaign for the French side and his displays propelled Lille to their first Ligue 1 title since 1954.

 

Major European clubs such as Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina have all been linked with a move for the Ivory Coast international and he says he is looking forward to playing in the Champions League next year.

 

"After the last match with Lille and a game with Ivory Coast, I will go on holiday. I have already made my choice. Either I will leave or not, everyone will know it later. It is a personal choice," Gervinho told L'Equipe.

 

"The coach wants me to stay. The club will play in the Champions League and he wants to play it with me. I want to play it too, if I have such an opportunity."

 

However, the 24-year-old claims that while he is keen to play in Europe's elite club competition, it may not necessarily be with Lille.

 

He added: "I can play it [the Champions League] at Lille or somewhere else, that is no problem. We have had several talks and we know what we told ourselves. There are still a few days to talk before holidays."
