NUFC may persuade Kevin Gameiro to snub Spain

NEWCASTLE United have moved into pole position in the chase for highly-rated France striker Kevin Gameiro – provided that they can convince him to turn his back on a move to Spain.

Flushed with the success of landing Lille’s French international midfielder Yohan Cabaye last week, United’s next target is to bring in a striker, and they are now leading the chase for Lorient’s coveted star Gameiro.

They also want Lille striker Gervinho, but The Journal understands the club have no intention of bringing in both, and the fact an eight-figure bid has been lodged for Gameiro would suggest he remains the priority target.

Newcastle had a £10million offer accepted late last week, which puts them ahead of fellow suitors Valencia, Seville and Paris-Saint Germain – who won’t cough up Lorient’s high asking price for the striker.

Gameiro’s club are understood to be very keen to do business with United because Newcastle’s board intend to pay the fee up front, which has been Mike Ashley’s policy over the last two years.

Spanish clubs tend to pay in instalments, which makes Gameiro’s desire to move to La Liga less appealing to Lorient.

Gameiro’s advisers informed English suitors a few weeks ago that Spain was his preferred option, but he is still open to moving to the Premier League, with United’s growing French contingent proof of their pulling power in that country.

United are confident they will be able to convince Gameiro and his advisers about a move to Tyneside.

However, he has been included in the France squad for Friday’s Euro 2012 qualifier with Belarus and friendlies against next year’s tournament hosts Ukraine and Poland, meaning any decision may have to wait until the conclusion of the summer internationals on June 6.

If that doesn’t work, United look poised to turn to Gervinho – who is attracting plenty of interest himself.

As yet no fee has been agreed for the Ivory Coast striker, but negotiations between his club Lille and United have begun, with Gervinho understood to be interested in discussing a move to St James’ Park.

He is close to Newcastle’s Cheick Tioté, who is an international team-mate, and United will offer him personal terms that will far outweigh the wages which he is currently on at French champions Lille.

Gervinho’s advisers are casting around for interest in the player and reports from France that Newcastle’s Premier League rivals Everton are also interested in the player adds some urgency to the Magpies’ striker hunt.

It was claimed across the Channel yesterday afternoon that an 11million bid for the striker from the Goodison Park club had been turned down because he has his heart set on signing for another club.

However, United are playing a delicate waiting game while Gameiro is still available.

If Gervinho does sign for Newcastle, he will be joining former Lille team-mate Cabaye, a box-to-box midfield playmaker who has agreed to sign for United when he returns from international duty.

Canny Newcastle have exploited a release clause in his contract to strike a £4.3m deal for the 25-year-old, who is one of the hottest prospects in French football.

An attacking midfelder who has just broken into the international squad, United have beaten Arsenal to bring the player to St James’ Park.

Cabaye’s manager at Lille, Rudi Garcia, admitted after les Dogues’ final game of the season that the player would be leaving the French club.

“Yohan told us on Sunday – first me, then the whole group – that he has chosen to join Newcastle,” he said.

“It is a choice that I respect, although I wish he continued the adventure with us.”

Meanwhile, United boss Alan Pardew has set out the qualities he expects his new recruits to have.

“This summer will give me an opportunity to bring in some aspects of the squad that I think are missing,” the Magpies manager said. “That’s pace, athleticism and quality.

“Although we have that in the squad, we need more of it. Those three areas are the areas that I’m targeting to improve.”

Has said that he will make a decision in 2 weeks on his future. Has a small idea. Will only move abroad to play in the Champions League.

Thats us out of the race then.

Got to push hard for Sturridge now i think.

It seems this won't happen. And never looked likely to be honest.

Hasn't he been saying he wanted to move to Spain for weeks now?

Thats a fairly clear indication for all but a few.

I've seen quotes that contradict what you've said TN, but I'm not sure which are the newer ones.

Either way he's had his heart set on Valencia for a while now - they almost bought him in January. They're in the CL next season too. I'm not sure what their financial situation is like now, but I imagine CL qualification will allow for a big purchase or two so I would not be surprised to see Gameiro make the move.

Where?

The only direct quotes i've seen are of him saying exactly what i said.

That was yesterday and today.

I think his most likely destination is PSG

Theres quotes on Sky Sports which suggest it will be either Valencia or PSG but the Valencia deal is unlikely as they cant match the valuation

And he said he'd quite like a move to Paris aswell

Boyhood PSG fan but again its said they dont have the money neither.

We are the only club bidding 10mil and paying up front.

Either way he has said too much. Dont want him here if he doesnt fancy us. Would be another Owen/Luque.

Thread over.

Speaking to French radio after playing against Poland on Thursday, Magpies striking target Kevin Gameiro appeared to rule out any chance of a move to SJP:

"I'll think about my future in the coming days - it will be Paris or Valencia, the two clubs are very good.

"I will calmly make my decision over the next days, I love both clubs and have always been attracted to Spain.

"We will see what will happen - an agreement has yet to be made with Lorient."

Cabaye and N'Zogbia are all well and good, but I hope we're still concentrating most of our efforts on bringing in strikers.

NEWCASTLE United will bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on top target Kevin Gameiro by tabling a mega-offer for an international striker at one of Europe’s top clubs.

United have missed out on France striker Gameiro, who agreed terms with Paris Saint Germain yesterday. His agent Thierry Gras told the Sunday Sun there was “no chance” of the player signing for Newcastle – a blow for the club after they had lodged a £10m bid for him.

But St James’ Park insiders have brushed off the snub and will launch an ambitious move for a striker who has a proven record in one of Europe’s top leagues and United’s favourite hunting grounds.

Newcastle are keeping their cards close to their chest when it comes to targets for fear of scuppering the deal, but it is someone other than West Ham forward Ibrahim Ba or Ivory Coast striker Gervinho – although United retain interest in both.

Lille’s Melvin Martin – France’s hottest property after some scintillating performances for his country – is also not on Newcastle’s list, which runs to four players based in Continental Europe.

Although progress will probably not be as quick as it was with the Yohan Cabaye deal, United’s hierarchy – all now back in the country – are hoping to step up their efforts at strengthening the squad this week.

A move for West Ham forward Ba is high on the agenda although it is not as far progressed as some have made out. United had doubts about a knee injury, but believe he represents good value for the money – and the player is desperate to come.

His agent has let it be known that terms have been agreed.

The underlined is an example of some stellar journalism. His name is Marvin not Melvin and he plays for Sochaux not Lille.

Ibrahim Ba
? ;)

;)

Didnt we have him on trial when Gullit was manager?...think he warmed the bench at Bolton after that......played for Milan but injuries cut his career short I think.

Anyway, thats the leading local sunday paper making two appalling mistakes in one article....I wouldnt sack Mark Douglas, I'd sack his editor for letting it go to print.
