Pardew v Hodgson (battle for 2nd place)

Recommended Posts

So we're just gonna count the points Hughton and Di Matteo got towards this useless 2nd place? Or do Hodgsons points from Liverpool count? All together one of the most odd "Battles" I've ever seen, especially seeing so I have no idea the point of any of it.

I count Hughton as Irish. That's his football nationality. (plus, if Pardew wins vs WBA, he'll have more points per match)

If he loses, then Hughton will win my little battle between Hughton and Pardew on another thread.

And I'd be only to happy to take Hodgson's Liverpool performance into account, but I'm not sure how to do it mathematically. Any suggestions? If not, then put a sock in it. :D

As for Di Matteo, they were 17th, when he was sacked, so he can't possibly hope for 2nd place no matter how you look at it.

And Di Matteo is Italian.... The point is, if you did it on points by each manager over the entire course of the season I presume Hodgson would smash it... if not, then I literally don't get how we can compare managers over an entire season who have only been at their clubs a few months. It'd be like saying Liverpool are the 2nd best team in England because they've won more leagues overall than Chelsea/Arsenal/88 clubs not themselves or Man U, even though at the minute they're not as good.

I don't know why you would assume Hodgson would smash it. Liverpool were on their way towards the bottom when he was sacked.

If you go by points-per-match, then Hodgson (as WBA manager) is WELL into the top-half of ALL managers, regardless of nationality.

If Newcastle win, then Hughton is not in the equation, since Pardew has got more points per match.

But if Newcastle lose, then Hughton will edge ahead. (either way, it's too close to draw a conclusion about who is best, Pardew or Hughton).

Lastly, and this is crucial. I would not count a performance of only 3-4 matches. But Hodgson and Pardew have both had famr more matches than that at their current clubs.

Indeed, Pardew has had most of Newcastle's matches, this season.

Aye, and Pardew was racking up the points then, wasn't he? :D .

Also when has points per match all of a sudden become your barometer of this battle for 2nd place of English managers?

Points-per-match is very important.

In fact, and you can astonish a lot of complete idiots with this one, the team that wins the league is the team with the most points-per-match.

Not the happiness league which is obviously the only league that's important.

OzToon, you're right, the happiness league is a little more complex, and you by and large have to divide the points by net expenditure on players.

And as you say, the happiness league is the most important, and also the most interesting. Mind you that's not very hard, when you think what we're comparing it with; Man U or Chelsea again? (yawn)
