Steven Taylor

It will be tough for us to attract a better defender than Taylor I think, particularly at the end of the market that we operate in. He's had a lot of injury problems lately so providing he can put them behind him a good run in the team alongside the improved Coloccini should be a fair way to judge his long term viability. Let's not forget that when we last saw him play consistently it was behind either Nicky Butt or Alan Smith in the defensive midfield role. It'll be a different story behind Tiote.

The pro-Taylor camp always seem to have an excuse for Taylor but Bassong didn't seem to have any problems coming into a struggling side and doing the business. We're also talking about a lad with over 100 PL starts btw so he's not some raw young kid any more.

On a side note, Bassong has been absolutely dreadful for Tottenham. Perhaps he was just having a good run of form?

I'd have him back in a shot like. The move was a bit early for him imo. I'd hang onto Taylor too fwiw. And he's been very good in the last couple of matches. I'd love him to prove me wrong.

It's a fair point, but I think Bassong is overrated a little and was when he was playing for us. His pace was a godsend in our generally slow side but he had the same grabby problems as Williamson.

Taylor needs to get in better shape as well. As a professional footballer there's no excuse for not keeping up your fitness when you've only got a shoulder problem.

Fair comment, Bassong probably shone in a bad side. Fabulous (KK :D ) signing for the money though.

He always seems to be committed and his goal scoring is important.

He's got an undeserved reputation for commitment because he tries too hard to celebrate a goal. That one against Birmingham (to put us 2 up) didn't deserve a celebration more theatrical than Tiote's which pulled us level in the last minute against Arsenal after going 4 down.

He's a mercenary bell end.

He should look at Barton who's remained pretty much silent during his contract negotiations. Instead, when it's time for negotiations, Taylor gets a weekly column in the Guardian to update us all on how gutted he is that the club won't give him what full internationals are getting, and how many other clubs would love his talents.

Depends if Barton is just going to fuck off though.

He got his contract in the end though so i'd bet he thinks it was worth sounding off about.

More to do with no other clubs being interested than us paying what he wanted I think.

He was offered a contract well before he signed it wasn't he? Probably went agreed to it in the end for the reasons HF says.

He's desperate to get goals and earn some glory for himself - which is great asset to the team from an attacking perspective.

There's no way we should be getting rid of him over summer

Central defender in scores goals from set pieces shocker!!! :D Aint that why they all (at every club) come up for corners etc? We shouldn't be talking about his goals at all imo, but on his defending. From what I've seen of him, he's no great CB. He's okay, but not good enough for a regular place in the side.

Tbh i think Taylor and Coloccini are the best CB's individually that weve had in a good few year mind, weve been weaker in that position in the past.

Im not saying theyre fantastic like, just theyre better than what weve gotten used to over the past few year

Bassong's much better than Taylor.

Aye but Taylor is better than what Coloccini was back then, thats the point i was getting at, i would rather have Taylor/Coloccini 2011 than Coloccini/Bassong 2009

But at the moment I would have Bassong back here to partner Coloccini

He's a player of average ability that hasn't quite lived up to the early hype. Nice to have a Geordie in the team but he hasn't done enough to cement a starting spot over the years.

I bet a lot of Spurs fans would disagree with that.

Wasnt he one of the rotten apples? He was great for us for 3/4 season but has been shite for Spurs for 2 years. Its easy to have a good run of form (or look good in a shit team) but barring that period for us I dont think he has done much in his career. Didnt we sign him from a relegated French League club that he could barely get a game for? Great sale in my opinion. And hindsight. :D

Don't really understand the negativity about Steven Taylor. I've never met him so I don't know if he's a top bloke personally, but I do know that he loves our football club and has put in some very good performances for us over the years. Granted, he's had a few off form games this season in particular and he certainly has injury problems too, but he's a solid centre back and he's always been someone who can pop up with a goal at the other end.

Don't think so. And I still reckon he'd walk into our side alongside Colo. Regular for Cameroon now as well I think. He's much more talented than Taylor or Williamson too, based on what I've seen.

I'd agree with that if I hadn't seem him play for Spurs. It will be interesting to see where he moves in the Summer and whether he can regain his form.

Re: bad apple. I'm pretty sure his name was mentioned in one of the talk ins. Might have been bollocks though as Shearer said he wanted to build around him.
