Solid Foundations...

What are you pinning your hopes on or do you not have any?

Seriously

I don't know about hopes, but what I expect is for our two or three best players to be picked off every season and replaced by cheaper & inferior players, plus the occasional gem to be unearthed until the current ownership sells up / gets us relegated again. I have zero faith in their ambition to push on.

Surely buying Tiote and Ben Arfa was pushing on? See occasional gems

Surely filling the squad with exciting prospects is pushing on? You mean Academy kids none of us have hardly seen?

Surely replacing Ameobi and Best will be pushing on? You're assuming there. Lets wait and see.

And yes we lost Carroll, but virtually everyone agreed that was a deal that was too good to turn down. The money was great but I bet less than a third of it goes into buying new players.

 @ N'Zogbia at left back.

He was a rubbish left back, always out of position, couldn't tackle and repeatedly failed to clear the ball. All stands to reason because you can't just decide someone is a left back because they're left footed. Has never had an ounce of defending in him and never will.

I think the general consensus here is that by some small miracle we actually do have a solid nucleus. Where the difference of opinion is is whether the foundation will be built upon, or whether the key structural components will be gutted and sold to be replaced with inferior versions.

If only we could fast forward in time to the end of August there should be a general consensus. Of course this will never happen because both sides of the camp will likely find something to cling to regardless of the outcomes.

2 "occasional" gems a year will create a hell of a team.

No I mean Like Vucik? Ferguson, LuaLua, and the other reserves who are on the cusp.

Agreed

Think its on record from day 1 that not all of it will go towards transfer fees. I couldnt really care how much is spent tbh as long as we get the right players in.

The solid nucleus is due in no small part to the squad spirit fostered under Hughton. A case of the whole being better than the sum of the parts.

What happens to that spirit when Enrique goes, Barton doesn't get a new deal etc, etc?

Why would the negative side cling to their negativity if we bring in 3 0r 4 first team decent additions. Thats just silly. I would hope your side would be big enough to say no more maoning, we're looking good.

The running total on occasional gems is two. The pressure is to find them again this year and every year after. If it was easy everybody would do it. Just because Graham Carr hit the jackpot last summer does't guarantee he'll do it again.

Remind me how many first team games Vuckic, Ferguson and LuaLua have played for us. Their combined goals & assists must be, oooh, none isn't it?

These gems you see only come around so often, we arent going to be signing them left, right and centre you know, every club try's to do it every season buying players for a few million and i'd say about 1 in every 10 - 15 turn out to be a Tiote, so we can't be pinning our hopes on picking them up this summer, it's just narrowmindedness if you think it's going to happen

I'd rather see Vuckic, Lua Lua etc on loan in the championship than occasionally sitting on our bench and getting reserve games tbh

Why do you assume I'm on a negative side? I try to be impartial and base any predictions on precedents that have been set.

3 or 4 first team additions of sufficient quality should drastically reduce negativity, but based on precedents I'm not expecting that sort of movement in the market.

For the record the 35m sale of Carroll will only be a good deal if the proceeds are used to make us a better side than we were with him. If they were able to do this with 20m spent then it's technically a good deal, though I'd still argue that they should be looking to spend all of it if the right players are available (I'm not saying we should piss it up the wall for the sake of it).

Regardless of what is spent if they continue with the trend of selling our best and brightest then that's a massive cause for concern.

And most importantly...wait for it...he wanted to leave us because we were always playing him at LB! Why would he ever come back here to play LB for us again? It boggles the mind what these morons will come up with.

It's fair enough wanting to be optimistic about our club, God knows we could use some optimism (you know, like the optimistic feeling most of us on here had around November before we sacked our best manager in 6-7 years and sold our best striker without replacing him) but fuck me, you've got to have absolutely no sense of pattern recognition not to see what's going on here.

See you on September 2nd.

Watching the game yesterday I was thinking how good Ferguson looked going forward combining with Jonas but it was lucky Enrique/Colo were behind him as defensively his positioning was terrible and he's so light weight.

And then I realised it's highly likely that none of those three will be at the club next season.

That's a good point actually. With Enrique behind him Ferguson got away with doing very little defending, whilst Enrique had a lot to do and was always pressed very high. On the other side of midfield you had Lovenkrands, mildly amusing the way he runs about at 100 miles an hour but rarely actually gets involved. It's a fine art that he's perfected of late. Ferguson could end up having the same sort of lightweight presence if he doesn't bulk up.

Who do you consider to be "Key" players in our team/squad which form the solid foundations we've built in the last two seasons?

---Harper---

-------*--------Taylor---Coloccini---Enrique

---Barton---Nolan---Tiote---Jonas---

---Ben Arfa---

-------*--------

How does that team represent the solid foundation we've built in the last two seasons?

There's only 2 players we've bought in the last 2 years that can get into your team.

We will be on fire next season without any shadow of a doubt. :D

That's beyond optimism and a completely ridiculous statement.

Not really. Had we possessed two decent strikers this season and kept Ben Arfa fit I think we can all agree we would have been a lot higher up the table. And we know that we can take points of the top 6 teams.

Ofcourse its mostly down to opinion, but I think IF we add strikers (which looks likely), then we will be in a much stronger position than this year.

No CT it's all down to your opinion, not mostly. Hence my comment that your statement is completely ridiculous. Given the fact this season hasn't yet ended let alone us know what the summer will yield and lose you can't possibly say we'll be on fire withouth any shadow of a doubt.

But even a complete mongoloid could see that with Ben Arfa fit and two decent strikers this season would of been even better!

CT has taught you well, young padawan

Well done on completely missing my point as well.

Yesterday was good management not good foundations. Getting the player's mindset right before a daunting game and tweaking the side to fit Fergie, Enrique and Jonas was good judgement. Also, our pressing was fantastic and we were tactically quite fluid in the first half with Lovenkrands and Shola swapping the deeper role in midfield.

Pardew did very well yesterday, its a one off type performance taking advantage of the psychological state of Chelsea and clearly providing huge motivation to players looking to prove a point and fight for a place in the team / squad. Well done Rapey, not well done fatty.
