Why are you hiding behind statistics of totally unrelated activities ?

 

You're suggesting all murderers should never be let out just in case they kill a loved one of yours or mine - I'm pointing out that if you live your life in fear of murder then there are other things more likely to get you killed which could be avioided if you're that paranoid.

I think you misjudge NJS tbh Leazes. He's pretty hardline on crime in general.

 

fair enough, it just seems that talking about driving a car and having an accident, and flying is justifying being a victim of a mugger/carthief etc, its totally different.

 

I don't think I take a particularly hardline on crime either by the way, I just think justice should be applied and be seen to be applied. The feelings and circumstances of victims and their families should always come first.

eOf course, but I think you have to realise that violent crime and murder are extremely rare - and getting more so even if the perception doesn't support that.

Sometimes but not always the case. I know some lad from school whos parents were drug addicts and he was raised with them. Now hes got his own house and a family with a

good job working for the fire service. There is no excuse for what them twats did. One of them came from a good family as well.

I didn't say that everyone with bad parents turns into a fucked up criminal. More that most fucked up criminals had bad parents.

Putting aside the notion of 'personal justice' or vigilante-ism or whatever else you want to call it I think the public at large would like to see much more severe penalties for violent crimes, rapes, sexual assaults etc. than currently seems to be being dished out. I'm on about people who have never been directly affected by these things too. Whether they'd be prepared to pay for them if they had the choice is another matter like.

 

Yes - I do fit the cliche of the left winger who's quite right wing on crime - but I also don't want to see people getting 40 years for being in fight that ends in tragedy (not related to this case but you do get odd cases like that).

 

that isn't pre-meditated murder though is it ? But it depends what sort of murder ie mowing someone down in a car that you've nicked, and you don't have insurance is the long haul in my book, for instance, irresponsible and should get the book thrown at them and be seen by the public to have the book thrown at them. We aren't talking about someone having a fight in the Bigg Market here.

 

I totally agree with Alex. Early release is bollocks, it should be going the other way if anything.

 

 

 

why not though, both of those actions are not those that personify a civilised society. it could be argued that the stealing of a car is less violent in its inception (unless its a car jacking at knife or gun point) than a drunken dust up. don't get me wrong i agree with the sentiment of your posts and the thread in general, i just think the line you've drawn may not be as clear or cut and dry as you perceive it.
