Before agreeing any contract with a personality to promote a product is it common practice to do a few test shots etc or would it be an insult to ask for one?

Really depends at the level your at, but even so it would be hard to get a "personality" to give up their time to turn up for a test shoot for free.

Again depending on the size of what you are doing, the contract needs to be airtight or you can get ruined after the event.

IE You say you want to run a press as with them in and then a few months down the line you stick the picture on a bill board or internet sight. They can then come back at you for all sorts of fees and as you have already used them, your bargaining power is null.

Its hard without knowing details, but as an absolute if your still unsure, could you not get a body double and the photo shop on the "face". This is the sort of mock up an ad agency would do when trying to convince a client in a similar situation.

If you do need a body double for someone like, say, D.Beckham, look no further, Pud. I'm available at quite reasonable rates

As long as you answer "It depends..." to any question do you find yourself regularly convincing people of similarly limited intellect that you know what your talking about?

But say you had half a dozen possibles and wanted to see which suited the look best and therefore wanted to simply get the player to stick the t-shirt on and have a photo taken with agreement it would not be used. Sort of a screenshot as such.

Personally think they or their agents would tell you to do one.

Just got to go with your best gut feel, and if you are not very creative, get someone else to make the decision.

If you havent already sounded them out re fees, maybe do this first as that may help you decide

you have a dozen possibles, you can’t make up your minds and you need test shots to help know what you’re doing... hmm, I think you’ll be setting off a few alarm bells!

as suggested, get some dummy shots with a body double, etc. Be clear which one works, the model and photographer shouldn’t be aggrieved for doing 2 or 3 options — but not 12! — whilst everything is set up. Any decent photographer will show you test shots at the shoot and rattle off several pics which you’ll view before moving on. But somebody will have to put their neck on the line and be decisive.

The worst thing you could do is to cock-up and ask for a re-shoot because you didn’t know what you were doing.
