peasepud 59
Anyone certainly COULD do better than Freddie. There is no doubt about that. Freddie was abysmal, and wasted loads of money on, among others, Michael Owen. Thank goodness Freddie no longer has anything to do with Newcastle United. I still find it joyous to utter those words. Oh for the day I can utter the words "Nick no longer posts on toontastic"

Brilliant hindsight, but how could bringing England's number one striker in at the time be construed as anything other than being ambitious and taking advantage of the club's stature in the market. Then again you seem to think Ashley is the best owner in the league... At least the previous owners tried to fix problems with the squad and the staff as they saw it, the current ones appear to be trying to create problems at every turn. Freddy for any short comings was not abysmal like. MO was a fuck up, but was Shearer? Ferdinand, Beardo? Lee? Robert? Bellamy? Given? and on and on and on. He was a twat who loved his face on Sky sports and in hindsight, Id say didnt manage the clubs finances that well. Im not sure where it went wrong, but it did. I always blame the season Partizan stopped us getting back into the CL, I think then it started going tits up. but come on, We were in with the shout of the league under two of his managers, couldnt have been all bad surely? geordieshandy 0
I'd say that most of the previous regimes faults arose from taking knee jerk decisions regarding the management of the squad. They always managed to replace previous managers with polar opposites of what had went before. This led to disruption and cash being wasted on contracts for players that were not fancied by the new managers. Which also meant they needed to spend more money on players that the new manager wanted. Shepherd and the young Hall were also a bit too media whore for my liking but they are certainly not the worst culprits in this regard.

Bellamy was sacked by Freddie, simply for falling out with Shearer. (another stupid Freddie decision).

Irrelevant Nick KP 0
Shearer was world-class in his first season with us. But after that, he never justified the vast amount of money we spent on his fee and wages (in my opinion).

He was never the same player, post-Goodison injury (I fail to see how the board could've predicted or avoided that though) but I don't see anyone breaking his all-time scoring record any time soon. He was a bit of a sad figure in his last season (or two at a push) though. He was a brilliant player for us whichever way you look at it though, and I'm not his no. 1 fan either. Guest alex
It's absurd to suggest football matches that gave you great pleasure (not the cup finals but getting there) and the games in Milan, Rotterdam etc., etc. were meaningless because we never won anything. Surely 'in the scheme of things' they take on even greater significance because we never seem to win anything anyway.

And don't we all want to support a successful team? Being "entertaining" losers lost its novelty for me a long time ago. Yeah, sure we can have nice memories of great individual matches, but it's looking like I'll go to my grave having never seen Newcastle United actually "win" anything, and I can't say I'm satisfied with that... I don't want to put words in your mouth but I just took it to mean that those times meant very little to you when you said 'meaningless'. It's a shame and, imo. very unlucky on our part that we didn't win anything with Robson or Keegan at the helm but I thoroughly enjoyed those times and would swap them for now in a heartbeat. Winning something would be great but very few sides actually do manage it and I'm not sure something like a League Cup win in the current climate would come close to the periods I mentioned. I've never suggested that. Read properly what people write. My point is that no matter what the club achieves is not impressive if it's based on getting the club into debt. Plus, Bellamy, one of the most important players in Bobby's team was sold against his will, simply to please Shearer. Freddie was a disaster.
