Swearing has been part of the game as long as I've been going and it will be forever. How many times does the camera go on people like Harry Redknapp, and you see or hear a "faaakin heww..." he'd just scored a hattrick in 20 minutes he's a doilham but he's full of adrenaline, he didn't murder somebody. He did nothing wrong imo.
Giraffidae 0
Rooney seems seems to be a different player when he’s angry. If he’s punished by the FA he’ll make somebody pay....

TBH I think that swearing on the pitch should result in an automatic yellow card, the majority of it is directed at the ref and it undermines this Respect campaign we hear so much about. I don't want to entirely sanitise the game but it doesn't require that much self-control not to swear. If taking your shirt off after scoring a goal is worthy of a yellow then swearing certainly is. I tell you now then, if I was a professional footballer I'd never score a hattrick in my career, because I'd be sent off after the second goal every time. Regarding self-control, it's an emotional game. I remember I'd never swore in front of my parents, but I scored in the U13 County Cup Final, to put us 1-0 up, and I ran over to where every from our school was, and went GET THE FUCK IN, without even thinking about it. If he gets done, it's cos he's Rooney.

It's also not rarely going to be audible enough to be picked up by the media. Swearing at the camera for no reason whatsoever was just pointless, and yes stuff like that is going to negatively influence the younger generation of footballers. To be fair to Rooney he apologised immediately so the matter should be closed but I can't understand your "he did nothing wrong" stance.

Tbf I don't reckon Rooney went into the changing room afterwards and felt immediate remorse for his actions, more like Man U's/his people decided that they'd get an apology issued ASAP to reduce the likelihood of a ban. Monroe Transfer 0
If he gets done, it's cos he's Rooney. What are you on about now, man? He gets away with a lot, as does his club. Most players don't do that sort of thing. Simple as that. He apologised so that should be the end of it. It's not that big a deal and I'm sure he'd get a small fine at worst. McFaul 35
Its all heat of the moment stuff, adrenaline is pumping, ridiculous for him to be strung up for this. Unless you play football you don't understand, at 5 a side as others will vouch for, I'll tell a ref to fuck off 5 times in a game, I don't mean it, it just comes out. The line would be crossed only if a player did what the bloke did in Mike Bassetts taking his shorts off in goal celebration.

Happy Face 29
Defending the indefensible there. Bollocks He swore. It's not against the rules. I swear at work all the time. The fact he had a camera shoved in his face is what's made it a situation. It was a live game so it might have been unavoidable to be shown once......I taped the sunday morning MOTD (the one for kids) and they didn't edit it out of the highlights though. Absolute wankers. They give Rooney stick for polluting the minds of the youth....when they're the ones putting it out to millions at 9.30am. I hope his next manager is as good as Fergie, because he needs to be handled very carefully through crap like this. The way the media knock our best players is bloody annoying and it's what ends up with booing the lad at the world cup. He'd done fuck all in that game on Saturday. He'd have been getting hammered by England fans. But there's no-one harsher on Rooney than himself and when he's been that quiet it's when he's dangerous if you keep backing him. Do you mean allowed to do whatever the fuck he wants? Exactly how has he been handled by Fergie? Off the ball elbowing? Shagging prossies? Smoking? Constantly abusing referees? Berating his own fans? Handing in a transfer request? By handling, do you mean tolerating the fact that the guy is an arsehole? Edited April 4, 2011 by ewerk

PaddockLad 17664
If the ref had heard it and applied the letter of the law (big if like) then it's a straight red for insulting and abusive language which is two game ban. If it's reveiwed rettrospectively like some bad challenges are then he's likely to be in trouble. Don't know if the FA are growing any balls and want to in some way pull manu into line or not. A touchline ban for Fergie is neither here nor there really, but Rooney missing two league games in April with him seemingly coming back into form may well hurt the challenge for the treble. Aye rugby the difference is they don't swear as much, the just walk off with half an ear missing. Besides football fans and players are generally working class scum like me, and I wouldn't have it any other way, it's why I resent the new posh rugby type fan in football tbh. Aye, both taped...but I went for the early morning version because it was 5 minutes longer. I've not seen it live or on the late MOTD, but on the early one you saw the "FUCK...." and it cut away. Then Lineker said "you may have seen some foul language etc."
