I can't believe kebab didn't make the list though Stevie; not your minging leathery doner death sentence but a proper chicken or lamb shish-kebab with decent fresh salad, pickled chillies and chilli sauce. Yum yum.

Aye, if I was still living in Germany then kebab would be top of the list, but the version you get here - even the "proper" ones, in my experience - is too horrendous to contemplate.

 They have good kebab shops here, run by Turkish types, so I'll even have one for lunch. Whereas in my 20s kebab was the snack of choice when I was pissed out of my head. Having said that, I've had some top kebabs in London, even in Balham of all places ("Abra-Kebabra", a name which sticks in the memory). The trouble is I'm not sure how reliable my memory is as I'd eat my hand when I'm pissed if it had chilli sauce on it.

Never tried one in the toon though, I've always had fish n chips or an Indian.

Me and a old mate used to have kebab night once a fortnight on a tuesday after work. We would drive up to Golders Green, Stoke Newington, Wood Green all over north London in search of the perfect Kebab. Not a minging Donner but the proper ones, in small off the beaten track places recommended by his Turkish or Lebanese mates (he was jewish funnily enough but looked like an Arab and so do i a bit). The lebanese chains doing shawarmas on edgeware road are great but the Turkish version in this little place near the cemetry behind Stoke Newington station was considered by us as the best Kebab in the UK. Abra-kebabra was an Irish chain originally i think (or i saw them named that in Dublin years back).

I have a Korean restaurant round the corner from me and it does the best take away ever. Its mix between Thai and Japanese food styles and is spicy, healthy and tasty as fuck. Its amazing what you can do with dog nowadays.

McDonalds/BK

Chinkeys

Pizza

Indians

Fish and Chips

I dont want to come across all PC, but seriously?!!!!

I live in France and everyone here calls people from Pakistan 'pakis'. Should i come across my PC?

I used chinkys all my life never knowing that it referred to a physical feature. I just thought it meant chinese and i bet most younger people do too. If people think thats racist then they're mugs.

Pizza is my preferred choice because I could eat it all the time. I love a good Indian takeaway as well but I have to be in the mood for it. Chinese is the sort of thing I occasionally crave as a takeaway but almost always end up disappointed with what I get. I much prefer going to a Chinese restaurant for a meal rather than ordering in.

Hate fish & chips, and not been to McDonalds or BK for ages.

Pizza all the way, especially Papa Johns.

Dead heat between Indians and Chinkies, either will do.

Unfortunatly, its fucking hard to find a decent fish and chip place in Walker, so I tend to avoid them unless im heading down Tynemouth or whatnot.

MCD's last defo. Ive got to be clammin' to go here and the first few bits of whatever are delicious but the meal drags on and you feel like shit after it.

you can't get decent fish and chips in london anywhere. all the chippies are ropey chinese or kebab shops. the flip side is south london has some of the best indian restaurants and takeaways around. we have a local nice pizza place too in herne hill called firezza that delivers proper stone baked italian style thin crust pizzas. got to say though, a grimy style takeaway pizza is brilliant every now and then.

I donno if it's still there like but there was one about 10 years ago between The White Horse at Parsons Green, and Dawes Road, on Munster Road ran by Greeks absolutely superb, but you're right everywhere else is fuckin shite. Long way to go for you from Croydon to Fulham just for a decent fish and chips.

croydon is a half an hour drive from me man

There used to be a canny one on Sutton Street just off the Fossway, donno if it's still there, but they were canny. The woman was ridiculously ugly though who served ye, even by Walker standards.

The chinese chippy on Heaton Rd is imo the best in the East End. Tried that new Gormans in Byker next to maccy d's and it was decent but since heard mixed reports. There's also a decent, white run chip shop at the bottom of Wallsend High Street opposite the bike place.

Years ago the one at the top of Dunstanburgh Road was canny too.

Pelmi's? My old stomping ground and where I got my first ever kebab from. They sold out a couple of years ago to.....yes, you guessed it and any quality of any sort went out the window along with the best home made chilli sauce I ever tasted.

Indian for me. I love spinach based curries.

Never even entertained that idea. Popeye would be happy.

I think I fucking need it after my first trip to the gym in a month, struggled to lift anywhere close to what I did before and I feel like I've been run over by a bus.

South Asian culinary businessmen?

Aye I think it was called Pelmi's I used to go there on the way to me nana's for sausage and chips when I was a kid on a Sunday neet. If it's the same place right, it was just doon from the Water Board place on that road, and if you went down the road right beside it you go along and down a bank and there's a tramp social club where the North East Sunday League host their meetings. Pretty sure we're talking about the same place. I think two of them were Italians as it gans who ran it.

I hope your not on about Heaton Chippy opposite Kwok Paos.

EDIT: Aye Stevie it was called Pelmi's. And the club your reffering to I think is "The Middle Club" is what its reffered to now, not sure of its actual name.

Thats the Middle Club and yes they were Italian, Mr and Mrs Pelmi and their fat son Benny who was a right fat, arrogant wanker. I once threw a pie at him and got barred.

Used to love curry takeaways but those "meal for one/two" things that Tesco or Sainsburys do are quality, work out cheaper than a takeaway too and you only have to stick them in the oven.

I do miss having a Dominoes near by since moving from a city. The pizza takeaway place here is greasy as anything.

bound to be the likes of Jimbo over there setting up shop, a chippy would do decent business you'd think.

"a shop where everything is fried in batter!?!?" it'd be like printing money

"Those English folks may have baaaaaayaad teeth, but they sure as hell know how to make daayaamn good fries."
