angrysteve 0
There's seems to be some technically savvy folks on this forum and I wondered if anyone could help me... My laptop (PC) switches on but nothing happens (if that makes sense?) - as in it illuminates the keyboard and the processor fan starts spinning but the screen doesn't illuminate. I think the hard drive is where the problem lies - there's a little indicator light which usually flickers - it doesn't do this anymore. I'm wondering if this is something that I can fix myself, or if it's not even worth bothering with and I'm better off buying a new one - either way I thought I'd inquire on here rather than shelling out 50 notes at PC world to be told it's fucked. Any advice appreciated.
LoveTheBobby 1
This might be worth a go. Its a fix if won't power up at al (discharges static that's built up preventing it firing up) might work for ya ? *Take out the battery *Remove main supply *Hold power button down for 30 secs *Put only power supply in, do not put battery in *Turn laptop on *Put the battery in

angrysteve 0
it's not the harddrive, if it was faulty/not there it still turn on but wouldn't go anywhere. basically what happens when you turn on a pc or laptop it runs the "BIOS" which gets the basic things for your laptop to operate, get up and running. it checks for ram, cpu, (and some cases a video card), that's all it needs to get up and running then it tries to access other things like harddrive and keyboards and the like, at which stage it might detect them but not be able to use them or not detect them at all in which case you couldn't access them simple as that. if look at the back of the laptop generally you'll get compartments for basic upgrades that are easily accessed, hard drive, ram, sometimes videocard(tends to be on premium models that feature). open the memory slot and if you've two sticks remove one and try powering it up, switch it to another slot test that etc, then try the other stick, least be able to check if it's dodgy memory then. Other than that it could be a processor or the screen etc. (i'm also assuming you've made sure to functionkey+brightness and screen on/off incase ya hit those by accident) Thanks Ant, will have a look tonight and report back with my findings. Yeah I tried brightening the screen!

If its an Acer they often have BIOS problems PM me for the fix - its (relatively) easy Cheers Rob - It's an HP and I read a bizarre fix last night. Apparently there's a problem with the North Bridge (whatever the fuck that is?) and what I read was to switch it on then bundle it up in a towel for 8 hours or so, then switch it off and back on again - and it fucking worked, I shit you not! It will no doubt be fucked again by the time I next use it and I don't fancy having to go through that everytime I want to switch it on so probably gonna buy a new one? angrysteve 0
Unfortunately the warranty has long since lapsed, I've had it 2 years and it was 2nd hand when I bought it. Its a shit laptop anyway, other than the fact you can flip the screen around and turn it into a tablet - which is only really useful for photoshop in my experience. Gonna get a shiny new mac when I get paid
