Some 5,000 people gathered at Cronulla Beach to rally against youth gangs of Middle East background. It comes after two young surf lifesavers were attacked last Sunday by a group from Sydney's western suburbs. Some of the crowd could be heard chanting "No more Lebs (Lebanese)". Others carried Australian flags and dressed in Australian sports shirts, yelled: "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie ... Oi, Oi, Oi". Fighting broke out around lunchtime as the crowd began targeting people of Middle East appearance. At one stage an ambulance taking people to hospital was pelted by full bottles of beer. More than 30 people were injured in the clashes. Police arrested 28 people for offensive behaviour and assault and blocked roads into the beach. "The behaviour that has been seen down here at Cronulla today is nothing short of disgusting and disgraceful," said assistant police commissioner Mark Goodwin. "It is certainly not the Australian way." Cronulla Beach was the scene of two violent incidents last week - an attack on two lifeguards on Sunday and a brawl later in the week in which youths turned on a media crew. Where it actually happened is in an area (in the outer southern suburbs of Sydney almost the distance equivalent of Walyunga from Perth wellsy!) that the locals refer to as "the shire" and "god's country" (obviously not a muslim god) but basically it comes down to the fact one bunch of caucasian idiots decided to pick a fight with one bunch of middle eastern" idiots and like all countries we have an inabundance of idiots in many shapes, colours, genders and religions. The 42-year-old man and his wife and six children have lived in the Kewdale area for eight months. Police spokesman Ian Hazelby says eggs were thrown at the family's home and the garage door was kicked in about 9:30pm AWST yesterday. "They've also began yelling abuse at him and his family and he's saying to police he's been living in the area for about eight months, he's never had any trouble before and he's rather aghast that something like this could be happening in Perth, Western Australia," the spokesman said. "It might have some sort of connotation to what's been going on in Cronulla, Sydney." Ramdas Sankaran from the Ethic Communities Council of Western Australia is calling for calm. "As long as it remains an isolated incident I suppose we've got every reason to be calm and not be unduly perturbed," he said. Police want anyone with information to come forward. The problem is the current government (very pro-bush) and its' supporting media are making more and more out of it inorder to support their causes/stances. There is one more week of parliment here and they are still trying their hardest to have the new "anti-terrorist" laws passed. Laws which remove basic rights and constitutions regarding arrest and detainment, which when used to the letter of their laws can be used against anyone who wants to lobby against the government - unions, student groups, etc. Any excuse just gives them that little bit extra unfortunately.
