Five years to become a world champion

Do you think by March 2016 it would be possible for you to be recognised as a world champion (or record holder etc) in any given activity?

We were having this chat in the pub and I said that unless someone was pretty amazing at something now, there was no chance. My mate reckoned that all he needed to do was find a minority sport and dedicate a few years/months to it and he could do it.

Which way do you lean? What do you reckon it would be possible to do it in?

I reckon I could probably be World Champion at Tetris in 6 month. In seriousness, in terms of sport, there's bound to be some obscure one that you could at least get fairly good at in 5 years. Something like Disc Golf for example, I could probably get to the Quarter finals in.

I reckon practice / coaching can only take you so far.

You'd need to have some ability in said activity to start with. If you find something really obscure though...

Thinking back, a mate of mine took up some obscure martial art in the nineties, and he was in the British top ten within a couple of years.

Like any activity you need a modicum of natural talent to start with. If you dont have that then any amount of dedication wont see you to the top. Conversely, all the talent in the world does you no good whatsoever if you dont have the dedication.

as to the op - yes if you have natural talent and no if you dont.

For me, no i dont think i could become world champ in 5 yrs

To a degree your mate is quite right, but the dedication required would consume his life and would he really want to sacrifice that, simply to be a record holder in a minority sport?

Im a pretty good snooker player...highest break 84 regular 50's and 60's.

Id like to think that with 5 years of coaching and a sponsorship would of seen me in with a shout or at least pro. Well....if that had happened when i was younger. Not now though...no chance.

This may be a really ignorant question, but why is age such an important factor in something like snooker? I've never been any good at it (and I've been young!) but to me it looks like the key is being able to concentrate for long periods of time (obviously with talent at the sport) and that can happen at any age. The only real reason I can think of for youngsters coming through and dislodging older players from the top of the rankings is down to motivation.
