On the Fence

How do you know who is responsible for a shared fence ( i.e. between 2 back gardens).

Is it as simple as which side the posts are?

Any legal property wizards or stroppy Titchmarches help?

Traditionally people used to replace their left hand side fence (looking out from the back door), however this was just tradition and Im sure someone said there was no legal responsibility one way or the other.

We replaced one here when we first moved in on the left hand side. Now the right hand side is looking one good blow away from collapse. The miserable cow that lives there doesnt seem to intent on doing anything so we'll have to wait and see.

Would agree to 50/50 though when it does go.

It's always best to say " It's your fence but I'll help /pay towards fixing it"

if you do it together you also minimise the chance of starting the sort of argument that leads to people suing for years and even shooting their neighbours
