Literally dragged mesel out of bed this morning to watch MOTD, only to find the BBC had hi-jacked it to cover this incident.

Is it just me, or have they got their priorities wrong? Yes, it's a bit of an incident, but the news channels must be covering this in a blanket coverage which would mean there's no need to pull MOTD?

Bloody hell, it's an explosion that has seriously injured about 30 people and people were unsure about fatalities. People also thought it might have been a terrorist attack.Still a fairly major incident, and a developing one.

And not everyone has access to news channels! And MOTD was a repeat anyway!

Calm down, calm down!

Yes, it was a loud bang. Yes, there is smoke and flame.

But the matter of injuries/casualties was unkown so no reason to 'go live' on Beeb1 imo.

I suspect that the real reason BBC went 'live' is because some fuckwit had reported the sound of a plane prior to the explosion, therefore terrorism and over-reaction by the BBC.

And, finally, MOTD was not a repeat for me

Well, yes, but at the time it was thought of as a major incident, and that should take priority over a repeat of Match of the Day.

Well the sky here is black and we're 40 miles away from where it happened (I slept through the explosion, was knackered since I was training last night)!

Hope they get the fires out, it's causing havoc with transport and it aint doing our air much good.

I don't agree, as has been pointed out, there are dozens of news channels and if you don't have them by now, tough luck I would say.

Yep, black sky here too and I'm about 15 miles further south from you. What's more, I heard it! I was up seeing to the nipper at 6am this morning and heard a tremendous low boom which was preceeded immediately by a vacuum. Enough to make the windows rattle

I actually thought it was distant thunder and thought nothing more of it.... Until I turned the news on!

What's more, I've got to drive up there tomorrow morning to go to work and they're reporting at the moment that the roads are all likely to be closed for fear of further explosions.

As for the north/south divide, frankly that's absolute bollocks. I seem to remember the gas explosions in Gateshead and North Shields some 13 years ago hit the national news, yes they didn't take over the TV schedules but then, although there was always a threat from the IRA, we weren't living in the same terrorist climate that we are these days.

An explosion, wherever it is in the country is going to demand national TV coverage unfortuntately.

As I said I missed hte explosion as I was knackered! Only got 5 hours sleep an arl :D

Me dad and his mate drove me down to a nearby airfield (they go flying you see) for a fry up in the cafe, and outside you could see the smoke billowing up

Of course an incident like this is going tog et coverage lads, it's a serious explosion, it's hardly as if someone set off a firecracker is it? I'm sure the people who were injured are truly sorry that MOTD was put back. ;)

Bliddy hell they sky's still filled with smoke like

So you don't think the media in this country is a bit London-centric? It's pretty natural really, and doesn't bother me too much, but it's a fact! Stopping scheduled TV for a story like this is a complete over reaction imo, and it wouldn't have happened if it had been in Boro.

About as close to London as Bishop Auckland is to Newcastle!

Regardless, given the current climate regarding terrorist activity, I disagree with you Renton. If this had happened at the depot at North Shields, it would still have the same level of coverage.

Fact of the matter is, if this had happened 5 years ago, everyone's first thought was that it's a terrible accident. Today, the first question that is asked by many is "Is this the work of terrorists?"

That's because the media are constantly adding fuel to the terrorist hysteria by changing schedules for stories like this! Seriously though, when they bumped MotD, I'm pretty sure they thought it was an accident by then.

Incidentally, there was a big fire in Shields about 3 years ago, with barrels of chemical exploding in the air like fireworks. Whilst nothing like as big as today's incident, I don't think it even got a mention on the national news.

Well I seem to remember it which suggests it did....

I agree the media are making much more of incidents like this than they ever used to, but then following 9/11, Bali, Madrid & London, they like us don't know what's next.

You say that by the time they pulled MOTD, they probably thought it was an accident, I seem to remember around the same stage in the London bomings, they thought it was simply a power surge!

They didn't know hence why they covered it, they still don't know and probably won't until they've fully analysed what chemicals are in the air...
