nortoon 0
Well if we could get Ba on a free then maybe we can get someone gameiroesque. Still thats a large IF, that we would even spend that. If we dont get Ba for whatever reason I find it very unrealistic that we would buy another 2 strikers of quality. Im not suggesting we should put him up there by himself and lob balls at him like he's Carroll. Gameiro/Ba/whoever - Gervinho Jonas - Barton/Cabaye - Tiote - Ben Arfa or Gervinho Jonas - Ben Arfa - Barton Cabaye - tiote Are both fluid formations that would work well with Gervinho up top. I agree that we need some more though, but maybe one would be enough if it means we could afford another quality right back or central defender. Kitman 2207
There's a shock, honestly us getting linked to players like that are such a waste of time unless they've got some sort of baggage. We simply can't attract that calibre of player these days unless they've got something that puts the European likely candidates off. Not so Ant. OK we can't compete in terms of European football, trophies, wages, glamour, ambition and location. But apart from that we've as much chance as the big teams to sign these players. Now, do I play Gervinho on the wing, or have him up front with Huntelaar?

Kevin S. Assilleekunt 1
Don't think he's good enough for Arsenal tbh. Not the type of player that's going to help end their barren trophy run, unless he's for the bench.

Gemmill 46128
In today's Chronicle that NUFC have pulled out of the move for Gervinho. Shocking news. "We were in for a number of players. Those moves didn't come off and we won't be held to ransom. But let's forget about that......and instead welcome Jay Bothroyd to the club." Monroe Transfer 0
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/newcastle-u...72703-28873902/ NEWCASTLE United are ready to dump their interest in Lille's Ivory Coast striker Gervinho. The £10m-rated forward is a long-standing Toon target and has been heavily linked with a switch to St James’ Park this summer. But the Chronicle understands that, despite reports claming that Gervinho doesn’t want to move to Tyneside, the truth is that United aren’t sold on the striker. The club have met Gervinho to discuss a potential move but he did not impress senior figures at the club in those initial discussions. There are also worries about where he will fit into United’s side – as well as concerns about his commitments in the African Nations Cup next January. With multiple agents acting on his behalf, the fact that he’s now attracting interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City means United have moved on to other targets. Gervinho has an excellent record in France’s Ligue 1 and, along with Newcastle newcomer Yohan Cabaye, played a key part in their league and cup double last season. But United do not want their foreign arrivals to disrupt a dressing-room spirit that has been key over the last couple of seasons. That unity is already in question after problems with new contracts for Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan. But United boss Alan Pardew has no doubt Cabaye – who completed a £4.3m move from French champions Lille last week – has what it takes to fit seamlessly into his new environment. “To get a player like Yohan in so quickly has been a big bonus,” Pardew said. “He is the sort of player I wanted in the centre of midfield as he is a little different to the others we have got in there – Kevin Nolan, Cheick Tiote and Danny Guthrie. “He is a clever player and he is a busy player. We were watching him for a long time and we moved as soon as we could. We’re delighted he is here. “He can spot a good pass and he is good on the ball. “I think he will excite people next season, and it’s great to have one player in already. “Not a lot of clubs have managed to do that, so it shows how much work we’ve done since January to get the players we need.” Fuck me - supposedly good enough for Arsenal et al but not good enough for us? Nice bit of spin there - if anyone should be rejecting anyone, it would be him rejecting us. Edited June 14, 2011 by Tecato

Kitman 2207
That Chronicle article is pitiful. My guess is that we put in a bid for the player some time ago which he wasn't the least bit interested in. The rest is window dressing. We turned him down - yeah, right. loonyTOON 10
At the same time, if he sat there asking how much they would pay him, bonuses etc instead of showing interest in the club. Then does he really want to play for us? I want players who want to play for NUFC. Maybe this is just a cover up for us been rejected, or maybe it is true and the club seriously werent excited by him. At the end of the day, we've been there for players who dont really care (Owen) but only care about the money.

I think unless they're from the North East, most players we sign will only care about the money, profile and winning things. In time they may grow to love the toon and its people but that's not the initial attraction.
