trophyshy 7066
I've had a look for our thread on this but can't find it. You my recall in late summer last year the govt announced that 1.4 million people had underpaid income tax, through their own ineptitude. clicky I just received a letter from HMRC demanding a fair wedge and that I pay it within 4 weeks. Did this happen to anyone else on here and if so have any of you managed to weasel out of it? It seems if you can prove you provided all the correct information to them then they may waive it. As I was employed I imagine that means I am reliant on my (ex) employers records. Having just been hoyed out of work thanks to government cuts this feels ever so slightly like having the knife twisted. Thanks in advance.
Phil 6
They asked me for an extra £400 last week for 2008-2009. They'd added my p11d (benefits) as salary, when it's already on my PAYE. The only record you need is your P60 (total income). If you changed employers and are in the high earnings tax band, there's a good chance both employers used up your tax allowance. Jill 0
My boyfriend got a £700 rebate and a week later got a demand for £600. He's currently disputing it as it was from when he changed over from agency staff to a contract with the company and they've got him down as earning far more than he did that year. Loads from his work are in the same boat but they've all been told different things about how to go about getting it sorted. He ended up having to ring them to say he was disputing it then write a letter and is now waiting for a response.
trophyshy 7066
Looked into it, possibly screwed. I was under the mistaken belief that they know what they are doing (naive I know), but the onus is on me to make sure that they know what they are doing. At least the mafia just take from you, they don't expect you to check their fucking records are accurate too.

BR means you're paying 20% on your entire income, as I understand it. Meaning you're not getting the 6k tax-free earnings. However, I include the following caveat; I know fuck all about tax

I got a rebate cheque off them in the autumn, then last week I got a letter saying I owed them three times that amount, and they were going to alter my tax code to get it back. If you're on BR then chances are you've recently changed jobs, getting your P45 to your employer should be enough to fix it, if the P45 has BR on it then you've more than likely been paying over the odds in that job too. My contract has changed 3 times in those 2 years and my agent hadn't properly informed the tax office. Basically my contract was owned by 1 company, then that company lost the contract with the Met, I was kept in the same role with that new company. Then the new company was bought out and so my contract changed again. All it means is that I get cash... so I'm okay with it.

Aye, when he rang they said they were due to change his tax code but put a stop on that while it gets looked into.
trophyshy 7066
turn out I have two tax offices who perhaps are not communicating with eachother. this could turn out worse than I thought. gulp.
Phil 6
You should be able to get them to change your tax code, so it's taken out monthly from your pay. Also, if the error is their mistake there's a form you can fill in to have it written off.
