When I was in my final year at uni and zipping over to Germany on a regular basis, the bus I got to Stansted started on the Digbeth side of Birmingham then passed through Coventry, Milton Keynes and Luton. Often at or shortly after pub chucking-out time. Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

 I agree, like I said previously, Birmingham depresses me and MK is a weird place.

There is nowt wrong with 'ULL

Its no worse or better then any other city sorounded by water and mid class rural villages.

You normally find ports are shitholes, Portsmouth is one also Lowestoft, Sunderland etc.., and is no better or worse than Hull neither. The point is we are spoilt in Newcastle and maybe we shouldn't be so condescending about places.

Stevie you're off your head walking about in football gear up there. We went through Paisley on the train, that's where Joyce got off. Haha. The weather must definitely have a negative affect on the mood up there.

In fairness to them though, it's difficult to compare to Newcasle. I didn't like Paris and thought Newcastle had far more character than it.Makes you thankful to be born in this great city.

Think we have Stevie's apprentice here.

I love Newcastle with all my heart, its my favourite place in the world but i find it very hard to see Newcastle with more character than Paris. Aesthetically, its a bit backwards to compare the two. However, if people make places, then they both have a point.

I don't think Paris is any easier on the eye than London to be honest, London has nicer buildings in my view, I just didn't like it.

I think in terms of character and charm I know what Mac means, I'd rather see some old timer sat making a rolly on them seats outside the Black Garter with a £1.50 pint of John Smith's by his side, than some fat Frenchman sat outside a cafe on Champs Elysee drinking 15 euro cups of coffee reading the deaths page in "Le Monde".

Thats just nonsense Stevie, Paris is broadly accepted as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. There isnt much in London to compare to The Louvre, Musee D'Orsay, Grand Palais etc. I say that as somone who lived in London for 10 years too, so i know it better than you do. The fundamental difference (and the argument your are looking for if you ever discuss this with a frog) is that London was demolished during the Blitz because we had the balls to protect Europe from facism, whereas Paris is a museum piece that retains its early 19th century splendour because the cunts preferred to surrender than have their city destroyed. Both cities have amazing river views but Paris edges it as its still standing from when they first renovated it in the early 1800s.

You have to be kidding me on? The drive from Traflagar Square in any direction for half a mile is one of the most beautiful and iconic of any city in the world. London far surpasses Paris in terms of stunning architecture in my opinion. St Paul's pisses on any religious structure in Paris imo even too. The victorian and edwardian style of building design of which we have some here, is the finest on earth. When I was in Paris I found it a dirty grimy shithole to be honest, and their tube makes ours look like some sort of 23rd century transportation example. The Seine looks like an open sewer as well.

the architecture in paris is lush. the difference between paris and london is they weren't cained in the war like we were. there are parts of london - elephant and castle, parts of the south bank and the embankment and peckham that were absolutely mullered in the blitz. london is a beautiful town in places but paris has far less of those pebble dash concrete high rises that went up just after the war.

Bollocks. Tell that to Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry mate. Don't kid yourself there are more Bermondsey's in Paris than there are in London. Thankfully Central London didn't get hit too much compared to the East End.

Shame about the 60s monstrosities that went up in Newcastle like. Fortunately you wouldn't get away with that sort of daft 'development' these days.

i think if i put my tourist hat on and did tours of central london and central paris, i'd have to say paris is a lot prettier, sorry. and that's coming from an adopted londoner btw.

Then again you can understand the desire to build in the centre (though the result is shit) and if you tried to build another Washington or Killingworth now I'd imagine there'd be a lot of objections.

Are you sure you actually went to Paris? Your description doesn't fit with anything I've seen.

That said, I wouldn't say Paris was architecturally superior to London, I'd say they were similar. Most of London survived the Blitz, unlike Berlin, which I didn't like because it was mainly 1960esque prefabs.

No I just made it up.

What bit doesn't?

All of it tbh. Where did you stay to get such a bad impression?

La Rochelle. We had the day in Paris on the way back home twice. There's not really much to contradict what I've said. I'll ask you again which specific part of my description doesn't fit with anything you've seen?

I did say all of it. So I don't think London supasses Paris in terms of architecture, Cathedrals, or the tube (wtf?). I don't think the Seine looks like an open sewer either, can't figure how you think that.

I think globally Paris is probably considered the most beautiful city in the world. I don't necessarily agree with that, in fact I don't - that honour would belong to Rome - but to call it a 'grimey shit hole' based on two day visits is a bit daft.

You're right, I haven't.

and there is nothing wrong with Huyton, plenty of worse places to pick in Liverpool

It's the only place in liverpool I've been to, other than Goodison Park & surrounding area, and driving out of town after getting a ferry back from the Isle of Man; Lots of boarded up terraced houses next to City of Culture banners is all I recall of that particular journey.

I think it's an incredibly bold statement to say worldwide Paris is viewed as the most beautiful city in the world, such a generic statement even by your standards. If you're yank you'd probably say San Francisco, if you're Italian - Rome, Spanish Madrid etc... For a city to claim that title it needs stunning scenery, virtually unrivaled history, classical architecture throughout and a sense of uniqueness. Although it's small for me that is Edinburgh.

I've already said I think the two cities are equal in terms of architecture etc. I've also never noticed anything amiss on the Paris Metro, always seems clean and safe to me, and much, much cheaper than the tube. I do prefer London overall purely because of its size, variety, and sense of vibrancy, all of which trump Paris. London is a great city, make no mistake.

I think Paris is regarded as the most beautiful city in the World by many people, in particular Americans (can't be bothered to look for evidence of this but I recall this from surveys etc). Paris was traditionally always regarded as the city or romance whereas London was the city of commerce. No point in arguing over such a subjective point though, next we'll be arguing about which bands are any good or not.

I love Edinburgh as is well known on here. Pity about the shit weather really.

better places in france

I thought Lille was ok, probably cos they thought it normal behaviour for me to ask for a pint at the cafe at 830am. Overall not a fan of France like, Marseille was nice in parts but a hell hole in others same with St Ettiene. La Rochelle is a quaint place I donno it's not my cup of tea, it's much more relaxed than the UK though, and it must have something considering it gets more tourists every year than anywhere in the world, by far as well.

I love Glasgow me like, nearest thing you'll get to Newcastle in terms of architecture and people. Bad day to go on OF day. Even the English hating jocks seem to like geordies though.

:( Aye I remember I was on a train up to visit a mate who was working in Grangemouth (shithole btw) and when a big group of Glaswegians heard our accents (everyone was hammered, friday neet it was) the ringleader or their group seemed chuffed to see a bunch of "wee geordiees" and went on to tell me if we'd been from anywhere else we'd "hae go' a glasgae kiss" shared his booze with us in all.

Slightly off topic but the biggest shithole I've been too was somewhere in a city called Camden in New Jersey in the states  what a fucking hell hole. Most the places I'd say have been mentioned tbh especially Coventry what a bunch of bamps.
