A Flat/Place to Stay in London

Hey everyone, so in August I'm fairly certain I'll be going across the pond to do an internship with the people at Opta Sports, doing statistical analysis of footy games. Really excited for this, and hopefully will make it up to Newcastle for a weekend and catch one of the early games of the season. ANYWAY, the point is I need to figure out what I'm doing for lodging. I have my granddad in Canterbury that I can stay with, and I hear that theres a train that only takes an hour to get from Canterbury to London. So thats one option, but I also would like to consider living in London as well. So basically could anyone point me in the direction of cheap places I could stay at or rent for a month?

Cheers!

For what it's worth, I think you'd struggle to get from Canterbury to Waterloo in less than 90 minutes on the train. Which might swing it towards living in London, particularly since a monthly ticket on the train would likely cost a bomb.

In my experience London accommodation tends to work on a pretty short-term basis, particularly if you're just looking for a room for a while. Even when I've been taking out a year's tenancy on a two-bed flat, say, it's always been a matter of finding somewhere within 4-6 weeks of moving in, no more than that - which is horrible for a compulsive over-planner like me, but the point is it always works out because there's plenty of supply to meet the demand.

So I wouldn't sweat it too much at the minute, just start familiarising yourself with Gumtree and sites like that, and be ready to start responding to ads nearer the time.

Also, FWIW, Waterloo is brilliantly well-connected train-wise - no need to restrict yourself to the tube map when looking for areas to live, take a look at the overland stations with lines to Waterloo and Waterloo East as well.

Ultimately, if you don't get something lined up before you come over, just get a cheap (well, "London cheap") hotel for a few nights and you'll find something once you're on the ground. The company will probably be able to help out too, I'd have thought, whether formally or informally...

cheers everyone! yeah they seem to be pretty accommodating. My granddad is angling for me to stay in Canterbury, but if I'm expected to be in the office at 9 am or so, I think I might have trouble getting up to London in time!

I suppose you could always split the difference and agree to stay with him at first until you find somewhere for the rest of the month. Either way, good to have some kind of emergency backup plan in the event you can't find anything. :D

In all seriousness, I could probably sort you a spare room if it's just for a month

Seriously? That could potentially be great. I mean I wont really know more until I get around to it, and Opta said they might be able to provide me some money to cover living expenses to I might take advantage of that. Yeah it would only be a month, it would be for longer but since theres no football going on in June or July theres really nothing to do.

But yeah, I'll probably revive this thread around June and see what the situation is then. Just posted it today cause I found out and got excited :D

The London branch of the Trent Posse will add "Meeting JonTheMag for a beer in August" to its next agenda and vote on the proposed resolution. You will be informed of the outcome in due course. :D

Duke Of Argyle posse isn't it? If I'm down then I'll join yous too, much more interesting than meeting in Newcastle.

Jonthemag I know somewhere absolutely brilliant, guest house, but a really nice one, own telly, own shower, breakfast laid on, £120 a week, you will not find anywhere remotely decent in London for less than £200 a week, and this place is really nice 6 mile from Central London.

Aye nee bother I'll pm you, you'll have to sort your neet time food out though. The lass is about my age, she's got a big derby but she's lush so nice, such a nice person, the husbands areet too but a big Millwall fan, I'd say a typical Millwall fan. It's not The Waldorf but it's genuinely areet. I've stayed in some right shitholes on me travels and this is definitely not one. No Sky though

The area isn't the nicest part of London, but it's within 10 mins walk of one of the best places in the whole city. It's only 1/2 a mile from Meenzer too so you'll be sorted for a drinking buddy. Normally loads of yanks in London though, 300,000 I believe, as many of yous as there are Poles probably.

Oh, is this your place out Lewisham/Blackheath way? Canny. Dead easy for Waterloo on the trains too, takes 15-20 minutes all in.

Where do you get on like? Lewisham or New Cross? I told you about that little hatch at New Cross didn't I? It serves cans and tabs all night fuck knows how the OB don't shut it down.

Anyway Jon these hooses are very similar to where you'd be saying I think they're about 5 away from the one, and this pic doesn't really do them justice neither.

Canny boozer just 150 yards down the road here as well, got Sky and all that. It used to be a right dive but they rebranded it and it's much nicer now. Some canny minge gets in to say it's Lewisham like on a weekend, it seems to try to drive away charva's.

Anyway if you're interested I'll ring the lass tomorrow and explain your situation and get her to do you a quote for the time you're there if you like. If you don't like it just find somewhere else but you will it's perfectly adequate, it's nice even.

St Johns ideally as it's closest, but obviously not all the trains stop there. New Cross otherwise as it's marginally closer than Lewisham (and less of an uphill walk with beer legs). And no you didn't. :D There's a place down on Brockley Cross like that too, like there's this whole little underworld going on. Gawd bless Lahndan eh?

Sounds canny that Stevie.

Currently in a 4 bed Vic Terrace on Kings Avenue near Clapham North. £500 all in a month. Sky, Cleaner, lock stock, the lot. :D

But as Stevie says, it's unlikely you'll find these kinds of deals on your own. Especially if you're only here a month.

Wouldn't be hard to beat it in my experience.

JTM, it all depends on how much you're willing to spend, I have experience of a few companies offering shotrt-term apartment lets but they're probably expensive for what they're worth.
