Forgetting £££ for a second, what squad would you swap for the current one? [/Ashleyapologist]

How does the squad of players that Ashley took over compare to those that are here now?

The consensus was that even before the addition made in this window, the squad was better than 10/11....which produced Ashley's best finish yet.

That would be Robsons team with a back 4 of Griffin, Hughes, Dabizas and O'Brien? And the awesome Jenas and Viana in midfield?

yup, the very same team that chalked up three top 5 finishes and progressed to the second stage of the champions league with shearer and bellamy up front and speed, solano and robert in midfield.

this side is looking promising but it's only promise at the moment. it hasn't achieved anything yet. that's not saying it won't go on to do better than robson's side but at the moment that isn't the case. and before we get too excited, there's still every chance fatty sells some key players before the month's out.

i agree though, the foundations are there. it's the first time i've been excited by the potential of the side for some time.

"Cabaye and Tiote is possibly the best central midfield we've had in 10-15 years"

Another one that was laughed at 4 months ago. I agree J, particularly around the centre of that midfield, the wings and forward line were fantastic though.

We are 6th at the minute playing with one decent striker. There are a couple of players you would swap in to the current team but as a whole I would rather have our current starting XI

Krul -- Given

Santon -- Hughes

Coloccini -- Dabizas

Taylor -- Obrien

Simspon -- Griffin

Jonas -- Robert

Ben Arfa -- Dyer

Tiote -- Viana

Cabaye -- Jenas

Cisse -- Shearer

Ba -- Bellamy

Nee competition between Robson's team and wors, and I disagree with people saying the midfield was better. People saying we come 3rd, the competition was shite, Liverpool were shite, Chelsea weren't that good. Stoke nuw would come top 4 in 2003.

it would be difficult to leave out dyer, shearer, speed, solano, robert, given, woodgate and bellamy - they would certainly compete for starting positions among the current lot. the backline looks stronger now but i don't think our forward play has been as exciting yet as it was around 2001-2003. we were an exciting and attractive side to watch back then. the current side is built more on solid foundations and hard workign pressing game. not a bad way to go and the tighter defence could mean the current team ends up to be more successful in the long term if the chairman supports the manager.

the main difference though is this team hasn't achieved anything yet. they may well go on to be as good or better than the side from the early noughties. but there's still every chance it could go tits up as long as fatty is at the helm.

The only ones of the people highlighted who would definitely DESERVE to be in the team I've highlighted. Dyer was excellent when he had a run of 15 games which was hardly EVER, Woodgate see Dyer plus he only came in mid way through 02/03. Shearer and Bellamy, Demba and Cisse, I'd rather have Demba and Cisse. Speed over Tiote?? Nee chance.

big shout taking Ba/Cisse ahead of Shearer/Bellas

ba looks awesome if he can stay fit, but his knee could explode at any time (allegedly). cisse looks an exciting prospect but he's done nowt in this league so far. you could turn out to be right but as things stand, i'd take shearer and bellas. they were a class partnership. bellas scared the shit out of defences and his running made the room for shearer to bang in loads of goals.

Woodgate played 28 games for us so thats a bit of a cheat. Solano was also dropped and sold by Robson so same goes for him.

you could say the same about you choosing viana in the team ahead of speed to back up your point. seem to remember speed starting loads more games than viana in that period. viana was a bench warmer mostly.

indeed it could will. If only we had owners who kept our best players and/or backed their managers eh ?

I really don't see the point of these FM type posts, when the "new" team hasn't done anything yet. Wasn't it Deano who was infatuated by them ?

In years to come we'll be comparing new signings with the current team and saying how much better the new lot are compared to.....Simpson, Williamson, Ryan Taylor, Guthrie, Obertan, Best, Lovenkrands, Sammy, Perch, Smith, etc.

The team I used was the one who beat feyenoord to get us into the 2nd cl group stage Fwiw. The same season we finished 3rd. I wasn't being selective.

Fair enough.

Think the team/Bench was stronger though...

Given

Dabizas

O Brien

Hughes

Distin

Solano

Speed

Lee

Robert

Shearer

Bellamy

Bench

Dyer

Bernard

Ameobi

Jenas

Elliott

that little lot is more representive of the clubs transfer policy than cherry picking the few successes, who will be moved on anyway, as we both know.

The rest of the premiership must be shitting themselves.

Head over to Rawk, and you'll notice that they actually are...
