LeazesMag 0
I think one of the main reasons for the TT-NO split was because HTT wanted to turn it into some money-making Newcastle portal with load of rules , whereas our mods preferred the more relaxed environment and style of posting we were used to. that is correct, although he helped me a bit with howaythetoon which I appreciated, he wasn't on their "staff" anymore the last time I contacted him. Gemmill 47111
I never go on the NO football forum, but their General Chat is actually canny good on the odd time I do dip in. I think the stereotype about that place being all young kids is bollocks these days, certainly on the general chat side. Having said that, the craic about Keegan (which seemed to be a majority), and the claims that "Ashley is laying the foundations for future success" makes the football forum unreadable for me. Reading both of those opinions offered up by some ringpiece from Singapore was canny ridiculous - you can either get involved in a pointless argument with some poindexter bellsniff who isn't gonna change his mind, or you can just stop going on there. And the former is basically pointless and frustrating. And I know if one of the little pricks with their overrated opinions read this, they'd be giving it the "OMG toontastic say my opinion means less cos I'm from overseas!!11" shtick. When you live 5,000 miles away, you have no concept of the feeling in the city, and you're completely detached from the place, then yes on some matters your opinion is utterly worthless. Which makes the arrogant way they pontificate on the issue of Ashley or Keegan all the more ridiculous. I wouldn't go on an American football team's forum at a time of crisis and tell the fans the craic about how their team was being run. It's incredibly arrogant. That thread about what people look like etc... I don't think there's any toon fan I'm more curious about how they look on the net than HTT. A fat Paul O'Grady is my vision. Craig 6701
So boards merged to create toonchat, toonchat then merged with another board to create newcastle online. Craig set up a new board and invited certain people to it. What happened between you's and NO? Toon-chat's server kept falling over, so the merger looked like it would give us one bigger, stronger board. However, it was like a bad marriage. The two sets of members were too different and had different ideas for what they wanted. The battle-lines were drawn fairly quickly and in the longer term 'the split' has been better for both boards. Bottom line for the failure IMO was that historically we (linuxdriven toontastic / toonchat / Toontastic) barely carried out any forum policing and HTT would ban you for farting in public. That isn't a criticism of either side but come the merger of the two boards it's clear it wasn't going to work. I understood what Chris was trying to achieve but it was a poisoned chalice from the start. It'd be akin to us merging with Skunkers now - would never work as both sites are completely different and should remain seperate to offer diversity. In retrospect what may have been a better long term vision is to have created a Toon network which each site became affiliated to but remained seperate entities. Could have brought in non-forum sites such as NUFC.com, TrueFaith & South Park Geordies (forget the name of the actual site for that one).
Craig 6701
Got the dreaded bottom of the page post, so I'm reposting this here We should do this! http://z7.invisionfree.com/toonchat/index....c=2968&st=0 Jon the average age of poster is about 34 on here I'd say, it's a teeny bopper NO thing to do. I think most of us make our opinions plain on who we think the mugs are, and who the good lads are, who the knowledgable people are and who the clueless people are, we don't need a poll to sort it out. I didn't even know NO existed or TT for that matter, till I read a thread about Newcastle v Olympiakos on youtube of all places. All these plate chuckers saying they were going to hammer us silly, and we ended up winning 7-1 on agg, the board in question ended up stuck with more Greek cunts than Jennifer Aniston's wedding. I didn't really post much on toon boards till that point, used to post on football forums, just not Newcastle ones. I got banned off Talk of the Tyne the rivals site twice for calling Liverpool murderers that sickened me so I thought fuck it, in fact the only toon board I haven't been banned off is LM's site. The NO TT second split must be what is refered to as "board wars". Was that the time we all adopted PAOK banners and avatars just to piss them all off? So why didn't it work in your opinion Craig these aren't my words but this is what I'm getting: NO - mugs TT - good lads NO - OOT's TT - mainly NE heritage NO - younguns TT - older cunts NO - power crazy TT - relaxed modding style (pah) Is that it? What was the straw that broke the camels back? I will just say 3 or 4 years ago new people that would sign up on here, often used the criticism that this board felt like a pals chat place, shut to the general public. I can say with certainty that is not the case in 2011. I think it's something NO people used to use against this place.
wykikitoon 21494
Also, why did everyone seem to join on the 25th july, old board break up or summink? That's when the split from Newcastle-Online happened, and this place was set up. N-O was an amalgamation of toonchat and something else (Howay the Toon possibly? Someone will know). Most of the regulars on here were originally from toonchat. We were called toontastic before toonchat iirc. You're right thinking back. Who ran that board, Philip someone? I can say with certainty that is not the case in 2011. I think it's something NO people used to use against this place. I think Dr Ken nailed it when he said earlier that Chris had ideas that basically didn't match what we wanted. He wanted to go down the commercial route and as such needed to make the place very PC. 99% of those who posted on Phil's old board just wanted a place to air their views openly and without censure and the fact that the facility was taken away from them without any care for seeking their opinion angered many. Contrary to popular belief, I wasn't actually the driving force behind the initial conception of this place. In fact the other 4 had to do a lot of persuasion to get me on board. Gol and I had created another forum before aimed at football in general which fell flat on its face and I wasn't keen on spending hours again setting up a place only to see it fail. I got on board when I was convinced we'd get the members and credit has to go massively to Scottish Mag, Peasepud and Jimbo for that - the amount of canvassing they did was tremendous! The other thing that sticks in my mind is that 4 of us were all admins over at N-O during the merger but it was clear that we were being totally undermined by Chris. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then so I and the others can laugh about it now but at the time we were making admin decisions that were then being overturned without discussion. This happened regularly until collectively it was agreed enough was enough.
Toonraider 0
God this has been a trip down memory lane! I think I was a member of the very old Toontastic then Toonchat. I used HTT too, which I quite liked. Stevie made a good point about early Toontastic feeling abit 'clicky' as alot of members knew each other and I for one just didnt feel part of it. Its far better in that respect now but I think I will always feel sort of like I'm outside looking in. I havent been on NO for absolutely ages, I must have a look. I think Im a member, though maybe under my old name of Looneytoon which I used to use many years back on a Freeserve footballchat forum ( I have people from there on my FB who still remember me first as Looney ) Oh the memories. We all met in Newcastle one year, went to a match and out on the town that evening, great days. And the main group of us from back then remain friends to this day which I think is remarkable as we all live all over the country. Is Skunkers still going? I used to post on there but you get so much grief for being a woman Couple good lads on there though I remember.
