Toontastic 1997

So boards merged to create toonchat, toonchat then merged with another board to create newcastle online. Craig set up a new board and invited certain people to it.

What happened between you's and NO?

Toon-chat's server kept falling over, so the merger looked like it would give us one bigger, stronger board. However, it was like a bad marriage. The two sets of members were too different and had different ideas for what they wanted. The battle-lines were drawn fairly quickly and in the longer term 'the split' has been better for both boards.

Got the dreaded bottom of the page post, so I'm reposting this here

We should do this! http://z7.invisionfree.com/toonchat/index....c=2968&st=0

Jon the average age of poster is about 34 on here I'd say, it's a teeny bopper NO thing to do. I think most of us make our opinions plain on who we think the mugs are, and who the good lads are, who the knowledgable people are and who the clueless people are, we don't need a poll to sort it out.

I didn't even know NO existed or TT for that matter, till I read a thread about Newcastle v Olympiakos on youtube of all places. All these plate chuckers saying they were going to hammer us silly, and we ended up winning 7-1 on agg, the board in question ended up stuck with more Greek cunts than Jennifer Aniston's wedding. I didn't really post much on toon boards till that point, used to post on football forums, just not Newcastle ones. I got banned off Talk of the Tyne the rivals site twice for calling Liverpool murderers that sickened me so I thought fuck it, in fact the only toon board I haven't been banned off is LM's site. The NO TT second split must be what is refered to as "board wars".

 I remember that greek invasion, they were properly wound-up.

Yes, the split has been referred to as board wars.

I know I'm biased, but I reckon most of the clued up ended up here (with a few notable exceptions), whereas most of the kids and out-of-towners stayed over there (again, with exceptions).

It's funny that RobW is a figure of ridicule on here, but seen as a revered, wise sage over there, as Alex has pointed out before.

me and wacky took it over because we had both been long term posters, it was on the way down and we just hoped to get it going again. We thought that as Newcastle Online was mainly populated by bairns and ban happy wankers, and here was mainly a site of slightly older but student types, at the time, that we could do a site for older posters to post about football with no pc correct bollocks, no holds barred type of pub chat and banter with swearing and nobody taking insults too seriously.

We gave it our best shot, and canvassed lots of people, but just couldn't get the handful of regulars who post from work etc to keep it ticking over and build it back up again.

Newcastle Online will be getting the most hits, but its quality that counts.

Aye, this is the niche board.

also I think I started off on a site back in 07 called howaythetoon or something, I think it was linked to ohmelads.com? I'm not sure, I think leazes was involved with it though. But I think someone there linked to toontastic and I saw that this was a much more active forum so I kind of just came here.

ohmelads and Howaythetoon nearly merged, they wanted to give us some website expertise [which neither me or wacky have] and "front cover" the forum with links etc and get google hits, along with me using articles I wrote for The Mag which Mark Jensen allowed me to use the forum link alongside my username. We got a lot more interest, but the lack of posters doing the basic day to day groundwork just didn't make it varied enough with the quantity of posts it needed. Ohmelads didn't last long either so the merger never took off.

I think one of the main reasons for the TT-NO split was because HTT wanted to turn it into some money-making Newcastle portal with load of rules, whereas our mods preferred the more relaxed environment and style of posting we were used to.

It is in terms of quality I'd agree. If it was up to me I'd telephone interview new members to see if they should be on here, or point them back in the direction of TOTT/NO. Quality this board wins hands down, anyone who says otherwise is deluded, always amazed to read the negative views from over there about TT, "that laughable board", oh dear. The elitism of some on there is hilarious. TT for quality without a doubt, although I will be honest here, even though it's a massive board, I think the most knowledgable football board in general, might only be 20% of them but even so, is RTG, I'm not taking the piss, there's a hardcore on there who are as knowledgable as anyone on here or NO, but there's more of them.

Pretty sure NUFC-forum has something like 6000+ members, comfortably more than the likes of here, TOTT, Skunkers and maybe N-O too.
