Christmas Tree 4858
NEWCASTLE United are on the brink of agreeing a new long-term deal with Joey Barton – as they bide their time over No 1 target Stephen Ireland. Negotiations with Barton – who is playing some of the best football of his career – have progressed well and a new contract could be announced as early as next week. United have been keen to wrap up a deal for the 28-year-old and Barton’s eagerness to stay at St James’ Park is such that he has taken a pay cut to push through the deal. And having secured one of his star turns on a new contract, Pardew is now hoping to make a breakthrough before their next match at Fulham. Their priority target remains Ireland, who is desperate to join Newcastle and play regular football – but his £60,000-a-week basic wage is proving a stumbling block. Mike Ashley is not prepared to go to obscene lengths to bring in players and will instead wait until the deadline draws near in the knowledge that both the player and his club will probably reel in their demands. Proof of that is that United have already passed up on David Bentley, who wanted assurances that he would play every week and a wage close to £70,000-a-week. After seeing his side draw with Tottenham, Pardew said: “I had a good meeting with Mike and we talked about a lot of things. “I keep stressing to him the importance of the group that we’ve got and we’re very close to securing another key player and that has been my focus. “But over the next 10 days before Fulham my focus will be on bringing in a player who can help us.” Although Ireland is the top target, Newcastle have also watched Wolves midfielder Dave Jones recently and he is a possible alternative if a move for the Villa man doesn’t come off. The former Manchester United trainee is valued at around £1.5million, can play in the centre of midfield or on the left and is out of contract at the end of the season. Meanwhile, United could even move to renegotiate Andy Carroll’s contract after the interest shown in the striker in the transfer window I know a few will say so he should etc etc. But still all credit to him in this day and age of greedy fuckers like Bent. Monroe Transfer 0
Why do you usually fail to provide a source? This doesn't mean a thing if it's another People article. Jus' sayin', CT.
Guest You FCB Get Out Of Our Club
It's all over the net that story, if it's true I'll give Barton some credit, because the player could get his wage matched somewhere else without a doubt. I think Barton's performances this season in many games would've got him in Man City's side for instance.
Monroe Transfer 0
I really hope that Pardew isn't satisfied with bringing in just the one midfielder. We still need another striker, for example.

We still need another striker, for example. I think its fairly clear that Pardew is DESPERATE to get people in. Its getting people in on a wage thats not going to fuck the dressing room up or a player not demanding to start every week as it is claimed Bentley wanted. I tend to agree however that as the window draws to a close, a lot of demands will be reduced and deals will be done.

Whether or not Bentley demanded to play everyweek, I don't know but that shouldn't even come into it. As a footballer he shouldn't even need to mention it and be confident in his ability to show in training tht he's good enough. I think he's shite personally and glad he's not come here. You're right, he is desperate to get players in but he knows it's not going to happen. Signing players on longer term deals etc seems to be the order of january. The biggest question I've got is 'why do clubs pay scouts so much to travel the earth checking out talent, then we end up scraping the barrell with a week to go looking at wolves players etc? jaythesouthernmag 0
Although It's not ideal by not paying stupid wages we are going to get players who want to play here. If its true about Bentley wanting guaranteed start every week and 70k then Brum deserve all they get, really hope they go down, not likely tho. Midfielder and striker needed even if it means shipping out Best,Lovenkrands or Ameobi to make it happen

My number one bug bear this window. After Tiote and Ben Arfa I assumed that this new scout, Graham Carr, was out there working miracles. tbf to him, maybe he is and maybe its just a shite time of year to get a good deal done. Still think we'll get a couple in like.
JawD 99
I imagine Carr is making recommendation and Pardew is asking for stuff. It's what MA/DL allow is another thing.
Guest
A player taking a pay cut because they actually want to play for us? How many did that during the Shepherd era, Leazes?
Tom 14020
I suppose the Shepherd era of silly wages is the reason he has to take a pay cut.
Monroe Transfer 0
I'd still quite like us to pursue O'Hara. Can't be on high wages and wants out. Edited January 23, 2011 by Tecato
Barney 0
Fair play to JB. seems like he isn't just paying lip service and does want to finish his career here. I'm sure West Ham would match his wage if he wanted it.

Dr Gloom 22197
fay play to barton. he's answered his critics on the pitch. i must admit i thought he was finished. but he desveres a new contract as he's been one of our best players this season and if he does take a pay cut to stay then he'll go up even further in my estimation. Christmas Tree 4858
I will end my career with United JOEY BARTON today admitted he was prepared to end his career with Newcastle United because the Magpies are finally flying “in the right direction”. United’s fine form in January has meant they go into February as surprise long shots for a European place, with United now in eighth place in the Premier League table and just a point behind what could be a potential Europa League. Barton is excited about the future and the 28-year-old is in talks at the moment to extend his current deal. He told the Chronicle: “I’ve started discussions with the club, and everything seems to be going in the right direction. So hopefully we’ll get that sorted as soon as possible, and I can just concentrate on doing my utmost for Newcastle United. “I want to stay here.” United are still aiming to seal survival first before getting ahead of themselves with talk of Europe – something the Scouser would describe as a “fairytale” end to the Magpies’ first season back in the top flight. But whether Toon players like it or not, they are in contention for a Europa League slot. Barton – who, like United fans, is desperate to see new faces at St James’ Park this month – said: “It was disappointing to get knocked out of the FA Cup, but realistically I’m not sure we have the squad to compete on all fronts. “The pace that the Spurs game was played at was the hardest I’ve played at for a long time. The body is under a lot of strain. “Man U and Chelsea use the squad rotation system so players can get a breather. “We aren’t able to do that at the minute until we improve the squad. “Realistically our goal was to consolidate Premier League status. “We’re on target to do that if we can win our next two games. “If we did, we’d be on 36 points and then you are thinking ‘hang on a minute, this could be a fairytale season’. “But we’re on 30 and we’d have taken that. “We’re four unbeaten and we haven’t played any mugs. “We need to consolidate that and keep the belief going forward.” And having run Champions League Spurs so close, Barton paid tribute to injury-hit Newcastle. He says: “Tottenham had Bale going off after 10 minutes, but barring that they’ve got quality. “They’ve been able to acquire Steven Pienaar, who is a top quality player to add to a great squad. We haven’t added any bodies to what we have already. “We’ve lost Smudge, Tiote is suspended and the big man (Andy Carroll) is out along with Dan Gosling, who has had a setback. “We are on the bare bones at the minute, and if there’s any consolation it’s the fact that the lads that came in turned in a performance. “Spurs’ ambition is Champions League and realistically they are in with a shout of going for the title. “To play their top side with key members missing for us shows the strength in depth we’ve got. “But we need bodies – we’ve got 12 or 13 players fit at the moment who have experience. “If we get injuries in key areas we’ll be in trouble, as would any squad.” Chronny

snakehips 0
Always talks well . Would be a canny one to see on the circuit. He has always come across as intelligent and articulate whenever interviewed. He seems to have come on a great deal in respect of the 'red mist', but it will always be around the corner somewhere I think. Some folk seem to think that the self destruct button can be disconneted at will, and will never appreciate that it's in his dna. I bet there's a lot of problems we all have that we wish we could just stop but can't seem to do. Some people's problems are a lot more problematic than others, yet we find it difficult to appreciate this fact. I bet he wishes he could just turn it off forever, but, hey, life isn't like that. I'll no doubt get slaughtered for this. Couldn't give a shit, bring it on.
