ohhh_yeah 2991
http://platformlondon.org/2012/06/26/blowing-the-whistle-on-sunderland-fcs-oil-sponsorship-deal/ There's a huge, growing population – the biggest young population on the planet is in Africa, and they are football-mad. Sunderland will become the Premier League club in Africa. Everybody will be wearing the Sunderland shirt, every kid in every school will want a Sunderland shirt which says 'Invest in Africa', believe me. It will be the number one club, so what you are looking at is a huge market and huge exposure, and Sunderland will have that exposure.
Tom 14013
I'm sure they'd rather watch Papiss Cisse than...err...I think Sessengnon is going err..., who do they have? Frazier Campbell!
Tom 14013
Again regards to the above quote - isn't the idea that it encourages people to invest in Africa rather than impoverished African children to somehow invest in Sunderland?

Monroe Transfer 0
How much are they actually getting paid for it? Not a penny, unless I'm much mistaken. To be fair to them, that's a noble gesture. Similar thing to Villa's Acorn sponsorship deal a few years bacl and Barca's UNICEF deal.

Howay 12496
They're getting £3m a season apparently, it's not a charity funding it it's Tullow oil who are paying them to advertise this 'Invest in Africa' thing. Not sure why they think they're suddenly going to be really popular in Africa mind, just because the word Africa appears on the shirt . Edit: Didn't see the link Fish posted. Still it's bizarre how they think they'll be so popular considering their only African player is Sessegnon who's from a country with a population of under 10m. The usual suspects are bound to be the most popular as they are the best sides, why would an African pick Sunderland? when they could just pick Man utd/City Edited June 26, 2012 by Howay

They should put that on their shirts too - 'Sunderland, Near Newcastle'
Howay 12496
It must make it tough trying to make themselves look good when foreign signings have to fly into Newcastle airport to get there.
ewerk 31195
There's a reason that other clubs haven't chosen to exploit Africa's commercial market, it's because the Africans have no fucking money.
