Mac-Toon 1
I see the ConDems have passed through to make Royal Mail private. Bad day for post offices as no assurance that privatised Royal mail will use PO for business. Any thoughts?

Kid Dynamite 7317
Nailed on the second the Tory's got into power. Fortunately most of the Lib Dem's have distanced themselves from Nick Clegg and will be eyeing up a Lib-Lab coalition in the next elections
ewerk 31593
Perhaps those Royal Mail workers who have been so keen to strike in recent years will now realise that things can get much much worse.
Mac-Toon 1
Upto 90% of the firm could end up in foreign hands with the other 10% given to employees in shares.(I may be mistaken about that though). Not good really, regardless of the workers having gone on strike in the past. Not sure the crack with the stamps and whether they're to keep the Queens napper on them. Multiculturalism though, so swings and roundabouts.
Matt 0
shit news. privatisation rarely works. just look at the trains ffs Look at the trains how? An industry that the government neglected for decades then when it was dropping to bits didn't have the cash to fix it up. Same with the water industry (although it was well undersold). Look at what has happened with NI Water. Stamp prices are regulated and this would remain in place should anyone come in for it. More concerned about the impact on Post Offices. Tories will tell you that if you don't like not having a post office, you should just move nearer one. You can imagine it- drop your mail off or buy postage from automated kiosks in your nearest supermarket, everyone come move to dismal orbital towns. The Tories were the first to say they were going to pump millions into the rail network years before Labour got in and then them cunts go in and promised the same. Post Office and RM do massive things in the rural areas, no doubt all this will be stopped or charged for, fucking disgrace.

wykikitoon 21494
Prices of trains tbh arent bad at all IMO. From Horsfoth to Leeds its £2.80 return. On a bus it would be £4+!

I never use the train so can't comment but I will anyway, that's massive money for a 4 hour journey.

Much cheaper to book in advance off peak mind. Still, quite a rip off, I usually fly if I have an early meeting.

Whats also bad is you can save money by splitting the journey up. I.e Leeds to Newcastle, Ive saved loads in the past by getting tickets for Leeds to York, then York to Newcastle. Its the same train, yet sometimes Ive saved £30. Its shit like this that shouldnt be allowed.

Matt 0
It's cheaper to fly because it's so much easier to get the train on that route.

Were you actually a regular user of BR in the 80s? yes. i remember them not ALWAYS being delayed. i remember not having to buy a number of different tickets when changing stations because you're getting a train run by a rival operator making your ticket invalid. i remember being referred to by the train staff as a passenger, not a customer. i remember the trains being affordable - £300 from london to newcastle? for the service offered, they can fuck right off with that shit. my train in to work is delayed EVERY day. and on the way home, it's never announced which platform it's going to be on the big screen until literally a minute before it's due to leave so you get this farcical situation where hundreds of people are legging it the the platform and inevitably, most end up missing it. and on the inter city trains the food is shit - £8 for a nescafe and a stale egg mayo sandwich with a bit of wilted iceburg lettuce? no i'm alright dear. plus you've got carriages that generally look like were last cleaned in the 80s. Holden McGroin 6927
Im sure British Rail were faultless as well. Not that I can remember ever using them. My train experiences (Southern Rail) are pretty good. Rarely late but I don't use them daily anyway.

Sounds like you're a regular user of a shit line. For all their faults, from my experience I would say East Coast is rarely late, almost never cancelled, is clean, and the food is as reasonable as you can expect in terms of quality and price. Trans-Pennine however, that's another story altogether. But then, that line was shit under BR too. To put matters in perspective, I used the French TGV system for the first time last year and was massively underwhelmed.
Guest alex
Are you making a fair comparison though Dan? I.e. I assume you're commuting in London, where I know the trains can be bloody awful, but do you have experience of having done that before privatisation?
