Obese teenager from North Tyneside has gastric bypass

Obesity rates among young people in the North East are so alarming doctors here think we should be operating on extremely overweight teenagers.

Weight loss surgery is normally only offered to adults. But with more and more young people getting so fat their lives are at risk, some experts think gastric surgery for children is the only answer.

Sixteen-year-old Jen Hogarth, from North Tyneside, was told she would be dead by the age of 20 if she didn't lose weight.

She is one of only a few young people in this country to have a gastric bypass.

BBC Look North's Chris Jackson's report contains pictures of an operation.

Find out more about Jen's story on Inside Out on BBC One at 7.30 on Monday, 10 January.

So what's your point? There's more obese people in the North West mate than the North East. Liverpool and Manchester are heart attack central for this country. Upsetting to watch that to be honest.

North West Britain's fat capital

Larger than life: Mancunian Bernard Manning will feel at home in Britain's fattest city

Mancunians appear to be taking their love of "larging it" a bit too literally - by being named Britain's fattest city.

Manchester came out the clear leader in the"fat list", which examined the health habits of the UK's biggest cities.

The third annual report by Men's Fitness magazine found that the second fattest city was Stoke-on-Trent, followed by Liverpool and Swansea in joint third place and Leicester closely behind in fifth position.

KSA is from that neck of the woods too. Him and Yorkie-Geordie used to swap photos on MSN, looks like Boris Johnson with an afro.

See this reputation geordies have for being fat, I go to Scotland I feel like my waist is about the same size as Bobby Sands. I go to the North West I feel the same. Fucks me off this reputation we have when it's injustified compared to other provincial places. Half of Birmingham look like Tyrone off Snatch too.

Now Britain is the fattest country in Europe (and the fifth most overweight in the world)

* Americans are still top of global obesity table

Britons are the fattest people in Europe, with one of the world’s fastest obesity growth rates, according to a leading international think-tank.

The UK comes top out of 20 European Union nations, with almost one in four people so fat they could face an early grave.

Levels of fatness in Scottish children are second worst in the world, behind the U.S., while children in England are eighth worst.

Overall, in a study of citizens of the 33 richest countries, the UK is fifth behind the U.S., Mexico, Chile and New Zealand.
