shackbleep 0
Former Newcastle United Director and Vice-President Peter Mallinger died in hospital, aged 74, on Friday evening. He'd been suffering from leukaemia. A lifelong supporter, Peter's first-ever trip to St.James' Park in October 1946 was a memorable one - coinciding with United's 13-0 victory over Newport County. Peter joining the Newcastle board in the late 1980s and stood down in 1992, following completion of the Hall and Shepherd takeover. However he continued to make the journey from his East Midlands home to watch the lads. Serving as Kettering Town Chairman from 1990 until 2005, Peter then took over at Corby Town in 2007. Some tales from his time in Toon are recounted in his book, "So You Think You Want To Be A Director of a Football Club." The Leicester-based businessman built his company Newarke Wools Limited after setting out with a market stall and helped bring the late Trevor Bennett on board. Bennett served as both club Director and President and provided valuable financial support several times - including funds for the purchase of Andy Cole in 1993. Perhaps the only decent member of the final McKeag/Forbes board. RIP
