dbsweeney 0
Remember that we may be without Tiote, Carroll, Saylor and Jonas (not sure about him) for the next few weeks. Tiote and Steven Taylor are doubtful for Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie at Stevenage after being forced off against West Ham, while Carroll, Ameobi and Alan Smith are already out. "It was a big result for us and we're really pleased because it puts us in a great position in the league," Pardew added. "We were losing bodies left, right and centre over this period, and we lost a couple more tonight. Edited January 6, 2011 by dbsweeney
loonyTOON 10
Best way for us to qualify would be through the FA cup. We always seem to be so unlucky in the cup draws, but IF we get a good draw for the majority of rounds (aka avoiding prem teams), its possible. Also because we wouldnt necessarily need to win the cup to get into Europe. If we make it to the semis/final, and the other teams are in the european spots in the league, we get it by default. fingers crossed
Guest You FCB Get Out Of Our Club
If Arsenal win the LC and one of the top 6 win the FA Cup and we finish 7th then we would qualify for the Europa League. Look at the teams around us, look at our form....have a bit of faith....allow yourself to dream. ---Harper--- ---Simpson---Taylor---Coloccini---Enrique--- ---Barton---Nolan ©---Tiote---Gutierrez--- ------Carroll---Ben Arfa----- Subs: Krul, Williamson, Kadar, Gosling, Guthrie, Routledge and Best. Back Up: Campbell, Raylor, Perch, Smith, Vuckic, Shola, Lovenkrands and Xisco. I actually think that squad there is more than capable of finishing 7th....im not saying we will but look at the teams around us! A few more signings albeit on loan or not and it will only boost our chances. Good supply of opium down the coast is there????? Next two home games are Tottenham and Arsenal we'd need to win both to have a chance. Bolton are in pole position, and the dippers will bounce back once WOY is sacked later today. I've got very little time for this "we could qualify for Europe" after one win and then "we're going to get relegated" after one loss that's happening on here at the moment, but I'd like to think we could beat Spurs at home if we can put a team out. If Everton can manage it then I'm sure as shite we can. Arsenal on the other hand I just don't think we'll see enough of the ball that afternoon. Asprilla 96
We qualified for Europe through the back door more than once under Shepherd tbf. It wasn't all top 6 finishes that did it. In all honesty I wouldn't be fussed if we didn't qualify this season. It's just having more games to get players injured and distract from the league unless you've got the squad for it. Very little interest in the games and you wont get a glamour tie until the semis/final. Totally agree, said it for years. I was totally bored of our UEFA Cup runs, the only two big games were against Marseille and PSV. The CL is the only place to be. The UEFA was so shit, we amassed that many points by wins in it we were ranked 11th in European football at one point in the co-efficient.
Happy Face 29
Europa league is shit anyway. Very little interest in the games and you wont get a glamour tie until the semis/final. It doesn't offer the financial rewards you need to strengthen your squad enough to compete in both Europe AND domestically, so invariably anyone that qualifies has a shit season in the league. Christmas Tree 4725
I understand people trying to put logical reasons for not getting into Europe but fucking he'll what bollocks. If we go into the last game of the season needing a win to beat Sunderland for European football we will all be gagging for it. It's also puts us on a stage that we are not currently on and can only assist in the aquisitions of the next Ben Arfa.
Mac-Toon 1
Pardew said this last night: "Like all strikers and players from the Championship there’s sometimes a snobbish opinion that they’re not going to be good enough and as Charlie Adams proved at Blackpool and Leon has tonight that there are players in that division who can play at this level if they have the belief." That to me says we're going to continue signing championship players. Obviously got our eyes set on the dizzy heights of the europa league. Happy Face 29
I'm not seriously contemplating the notion of us reaching it though. Just commenting on the logistical problem for any club qualifying for the Europa league. Teams should treat it like the league cup and go with reserves until UEFA halve the number of games. Happy Face 29
Just counting up the number of games Qualifying round 1 = 2 Qualifying round 2 = 2 Qualifying round 3 = 2 Play-off = 2 Group stage = 6 Round of 32 = 2 Round of 16 = 2 QF = 2 SF = 2 Final =1 Up to 23 games to win it. Mental.
LeazesMag 0
Stop to consider that we are still just a newly-promoted side. Only two games ago we had only lost two games in a row but we had the deadly 'Relegation' thread up and running. Now we have had two wins in a row and we'll be qualifying for Europe? Let us consider this if we can string together 3 or 4 wins, or at least 5 or so non-defeats in a row. Let us strive for safety, and once (and if) that's achieved, see where we can push on from there. Maybe we should consolidate for safety, and then concentrate on a good Cup run? --------- And Leazes, all you ever go on about is current lack of ambition and the glory days of life under the all-spending Shepherd. If what you want is not funded by large amounts of spending, how will it occur? I don't mean to have a beef with you, it's just that by belittling the idea of the Europa League as being something we only laughed as is delusional considering the circumstances we are in. I'm not having a go at you mate, I realise that you aren't one of the idiots on here, and I admire your optimism, but I still say the club is not geared to success. That is all there is to it really. I'm laughing at those who demeaned the regime that ran the club while it was qualifying for the Europa League [and even the Champions League] in the past, and claimed how embarrassing it all was, but would take it like a shot now, that's all. I know for first season up we are doing OK, but that's all, OK. I say that because I think a mid table position isn't OK for NUFC , I think it isn't good enough for NUFC under any circumstances whatsoever. The point is that expectations have been lowered and so it is now considered success. I think in 2 or 3 years time it will still be considered success by the owner, and that is the crucial difference. FWIW, I also think Pardew could well end up making a lot of people eat their words, although his hands are still tied so he won't succeed to the degree that NUFC ought to, but I think he will do better than Hughton would have done, although that can never be proven now. No disrespect to Hughton who did a great job and deserves the respect he has been given for it. Thing is Leazes, you can't leap from promoted to title challenge any more. Not even with an unlimited warchest. I'd be far happier with a steady improvement than I would be for an idiot to spunk £150m on the squad, only to get bored and leave us crippled by debt. I'm not saying I think Ashley is definitely going to lead to a period of stability and prosperity. I think he's far too much of a prick for that. Blackburn are going to find out that the Venky's aren't going to make them title challengers. There are too many rich-boy playthings in this league as it is. If we can finish 8th this season I'd be delighted, but that delight would be tempered if we were to fail to build on this and end up selling players here and there , signing shit (or trophy) players and stumbling back into the mire. A James Perch is as bad as signing a Duff imo. By that I mean, James Perch isn't good enough and is just a waste of a squad place, Duff wasn't needed, wasn't good enough, didn't care and was on big wages. exactly. Time will tell, but I would see a better than expected position this season as an upward blip, and wouldn't expect him to build on it, even under McKeag etc we had the occasional good league position [but not many which is the point] and ended up losing our best players ie selling them. Some of them would have stayed at the club if the club had been progressive but eventually wanted to go because they weren't. Anyway, I don't agree with what you say about Duff. He had been a top player, and to all intents and purposes was still a good player available for cut price and turned down Liverpool to come here, this is a massively different proposition to signing a cheap 3rd rate reserve defender from a 2nd division club. There ARE too many rich boys, you are right, but you just have to keep up as best you can, we still have the advantage of our huge fanbase and potential which should not be undervalued or untapped. Guest alex
I thought Duff had a decent attitude tbf. He'd just lost a yard or two of pace and that was his game, i.e. pace. He actually looked like he gave a fuck when we went down as well.

Dr Gloom 21924
half the europea league is a waste of time and it's annoying the way you end up with shedloads of non televised sundya games but i'd rathe rbe in it than not. it raises the club's profile across europe. obvioulsy the champions league is where we'd all like to be but we're light years away from getting back there. I wrote off Best like many others although I thought he was a big powerful lad who had been unlucky once or twice and so should have watched him first. We were in the pub before the game and my mate said we would win 5-0 and I said aye and Leon Best would score 4 of them [joking but hopeful]. That was close. He deserves a chance now, he put himself about a lot more than Ameobi does most of the time and hopefully he will continue to do that, he doesn't necessarily need to be a big goalscorer but he took his first goal superbly considering the pressure he must have been feeling etc. Who did he go to on the touchline when he scored, could anybody tell who it was ? Ken 119
Europe is not important at all imo, and I wouldn't want us to get a spot. We barely have a squad big enough to get through the rigors of the league let alone worry about other competitions. Would Ashley allow the squad to be expanded in 2011/12, I don't think so, so why hope for it?

True to a point Stevie, but you are better off in it than not, it raises the clubs profile and this is what has attracted a lot of the top foreigners we have signed to the club as well as the profile of the club generally. It's a sign of the times though, and it's sad, particularly when some managers make it blatantly obvious they would rather finish 4th in the league than win the FA Cup or even the League Cup at Wembley, because it's their job to do that.
