Couldnt help laughing when ferguson then squared up to him I also think ferguson must have been chuntering away at him because Baum just seemed to get more livid as the game went on. Now Ferguson, who made his Premier League debut against West Ham earlier this month and already has one senior international cap, and midfielder McLaughlin, who has been a consistent performer for Peter Beardsley's Reserve team, have been chosen for Northern Ireland. Ferguson, 19, and McLaughlin, 20, both have four caps at under-21 level. They have also played for their country at under-19 and under-17 level. The skilful left-back has quickly elevated himself through the ranks at St James’ Park, and Pardew admits he is just a heartbeat away from the action in his role as understudy to Jose Enrique. Ferguson shone in the Carling Cup victory at Chelsea but has not played in the first team since his impressive cameo against West Ham in January. However, Pardew pulled him out of the reserve-team tour of Italy last week with Premier League action in mind. Pardew told the Chronicle: “We kept Ferguson here rather then send him to Italy because he is close to the first-team squad now. “I see him ultimately as a full-back, but he needs to get stronger. “He is on the milk and steak diet, rather than the chicken and pasta, it is all about protein! “He has a great chance here.” Pardew also revealed he plans to assess his options with some of his younger fledglings with exciting midfielder Michael Richardson, England youth international Ryan Donaldson, currently on loan at Hartlepool, and giant defender Matthew Grieve all out of contract in the summer. Unlucky Geordie lad Grieve sustained a horrific facial injury when he smashed his cheekbone while on loan at Stockport County and hopes to be back before the end of the reserve- team campaign. Newcastle face Arsenal on March 9 at St James’ Park in their next reserve-team fixture. Pardew added: “I do not have a problem with focusing on some of the younger players. “I have a lot more time to do that now. “We had the Man United game cancelled because of the surface last week, but there are games coming up.” Pardew has always made it clear he prefers his youngsters to go out on loan, and the likes of Phil Airey and Tamas Kadar, who is recovering from a groin injury, look certainties to be farmed out again next season. For now Pardew is happy to dangle the carrot of being a first- team squad member in front of some of his young guns. He also hinted defender James Tavernier is in with a shout of the first team. He added: “I know James is doing terrific with Gateshead. “He has a real chance of threatening the squad next year.” “He is on the milk and steak diet, rather than the chicken and pasta". Both high in fats. Suggests to me that he not only needs to build up his muscle mass but also his general overall mass. Magpies boss Alan Pardew fears left-back Enrique is, ironically, Anfield-bound in the summer and is lining up the Norwegian to take his place. Riise only has one more year left on his contract at Roma and would be available on a cut-price deal. He could easily fit straight back into the Premier League, having learned the ropes in Liverpool's Champions League-winning squad. 4 lines, no quotes, utter crap.
