Kevin 1
Hey guys only 7 days till christmas, i'm gonna do an advent calander for every day leading up to the festive day. Todays theme is - Fighting - toon style. There are of course dozens of instances, including some in the very recent past that can't be revealed, so we've turned the other cheek and excluded current players. So, seconds out.... 1992 with wagers riding on him being unable to get through a training session without swearing or losing his temper, Lee Clark was the subject of some "keen tackling" from United defender Benny Kristensen, as John Beresford recounts: "Benny flew straight into the back of him again, this time it was like a volcano erupting - Clarkie went ballistic and as he got up he lashed out at Benny and cracked him one in the mouth. Almost straight away he realised what he'd done and said sorry but we were howling and getting ready to collect our winnings." 1998 The United squad were in Dublin's "Cafe-en-Seine" bar for spot of R & R as part of a three day, mid-season "golfing trip" when Keith Gillespie made the fatal mistake of flicking bottle tops at Alan Shearer. David Batty takes up the story: 'Al was saying, 'Do that one more time and I'll give you a good hiding. The pair went outside and then Batty saw a pair of legs in the air. We ran out to see Gillespie spark out in the gutter. There was blood everywhere. Allegedly, Keith had taken a swing as the two made their way towards the rear of the pub and Al had turned and decked him." Gillespie's agent called the incident "horseplay", while Terry McDermott claimed that the winger had tripped over a paving stone, banged his head and was taken to hospital as a precaution. 2001 Andy Griffin aka "Fred West" was no respecter of reputations while at United, clashing head-on with various opponents including Mark Kinsella....and a metro train. However, his wholehearted preparations for an away game at Everton saw him repeatedly clash with Laurent Robert in a training ground game, until finally the winger sought revenge and the pair "got it on". A year later Griff then brought the incident up again when interviewed after scoring the goal that beat Juventus at SJP, in response to questions about his style: "I kick Laurent Robert in training and he's one of our players". The pair were later reunited at Pompey, without apparent incident. 2009 (half) breaking our vow not to mention current Magpies, the departure of Charles N'Zogbia from SJP was hastened not only by his reaction to being called 'Insomnia' by then United boss Joe Kinnear but also a training ground altercation with Andy Carrroll. The pair clashed after Zog reacted badly to a late tackle from the striker and started throwing punches, although the pair were quickly separated by team mates. Any chance that the incident could have been hushed up though was ended by the presence of the Carlisle United side on an adjacent pitch, warming up for a friendly kickabout. When questioned later about the incident, JFK used the A word to describe it: "'andbags". 2010 Andy Carroll, Steven Taylor. And that's all we've got time for.... See you in 24 hours.. peace
