Christmas Tree 4975
Trying to think how long it is since I enjoyed watching Newcastle so much. Its a tough one. Naturally we swept a lot of teams aside last year but this year, even in matches we have lost, our style of play has been a pleasure to watch. Whether its seeing how Krul performs or Enriques strength or being dazzled by the sheer skills of Tiote or the turnaround of Barton or even the goals of Nolan and Caroll, I cant remember when it was last this enjoyable. Its probably back to Sir Bobs days, but even then, I didnt have quite the respect for the players as I do these days. Just seems to be a lot of guts, pride and fun from this squad which is the best Ive personally felt since KK.

acrossthepond 917
Krul's not been great. I'll 100% agree that some of the performances this season have been the best in a very long time and are cause for hope.

I'd keep him in ahead of Harper

His save against Arsenal was definitely a match winner though!

I'm not knocking him, he did well but Torres shoudln't have allowed him a chance. I do worry he doesn't seem to save enough like even though I struggle to fault him for much (other than the first Arsenal cup goal).

acrossthepond 917
I didn't say Krul had been awful, I said he's not been great and I'm sticking with that. It was a great save and he had another good reflex save earlier in the match, but he doesn't fill me with confidence when he comes out and flaps at various aerial balls. I'd leave him as #1 for the time being but have Harper ready to take back over if he hits a patch of bad form.

Krul looks to me as though he has had his natural ability restrained by the coaching staff. Before he got into the first team, the few occasions I saw him he would come out and easily save in all areas of his box. It looks as though he has been told to follow Harper and before him Given, and stay on his line, almost. Think this is why he starts to come and then stops at the minute. Anorthernsoul 1221
The more games Krul has the better he will get, no doubt about it. We've seen glimpses of what talent he has already this season, confidence and experience in his first real season will be vital. I can see him being a top quality keeper for us for years to come and a future Dutch international, he does need to be more vocal though

Happy Face 29
Fully fit and passing well we do look invincible at times. Imagine what we'd be like if Ben Arfa had stayed fit and Barton hadn't been suspended? Probably top four and one Mr Hughton still in a job. Ben Arfa and Barton both played against Stoke and Blackpool...at home....we lost both those games. Suppose that's the benefit of a hypothetical argument rather than a fact based one though. We looked better when Ben Arfa came on against Blackpool and looked worse when he went off against Stoke I agree though. I'm more disappointed with the Fulham result than either of those two btw. Imagine we had got the deserved equaliser against Blackpool and nicked one against Fulham. We'd be on the same points as Bolton. Or not beaten Arsenal and Liverpool, we'd be virtually in the relegation spots. Its mad how fine the line is between success and failure. On that point, Ben Arfa could have added more than just 2 points to our total if he had continued to adapt well.

Facts I take your point but Ben Arfa only got 10 or so minutes against Blackpool and Tiote wasnt playing. The point as I think Liverpool proved, is that usually when we have our best team out we play extremely well and recent results would probably have been quite different if the best team had been playing. I think the players have been great at getting themselves 'up' for the big games (the first home game, the derby, Hughton's farewell, Arsenal) but that's been pretty rare in all honesty, and really given us a lift whenever it's happened. We've been average otherwise and downright awful on occasion. That in itself is brilliant. I expected us to be awful far more frequently. But top 4 talk is ridiculous. If Barton and Tiote and Ben Arfa and Nolan had all been fit and not banned throughout the season we might have a few more points, and if John Travolta didn't bum men he wouldn't be gay.
