It's quite ironic that that season was probably the only time I can remember the old board spending any money witth Bessant, Thorne, Hendrie and (the massive success that was) John Robertson all coming in.

A cynic might point out that the total amount matched the Beardsley fee.

And a pendant might point out that PB had been sold the summer before and it was in fact the £2.2m we got from flogging Gazza to Spurs that funded this spending spree.

In saying that, it should also be said that the Milburn Stand in it's original form was started the summer Pedro went to Liverpool and was known as the "Beardsley Stand" to some

and this is honestly this I was only 12 but I remember it vividly, the first game of the season was against Leeds and on the way to the ground there were hundreds of blokes with USFC t shirts on basically outright abusing us for going in.

Where about were all these blokes stood Stevie?.....because I'm 41 which makes me a fair bit older than you were in August 1989 and I don't remember seeing anything like that whatsover....not saying it didnt happen, but if they were stood outside the Gallowgate I must have missed them.....I think it was a "shut out" that day a well...they closed the turnstiles for some reason (quite a regular occurance back then), even though there was only about 25k in the ground.

May get a bit of jip for this, but it was 'before my time', but why did we only have attendences of 16,000 in 1990?

http://www.newcastle-online.org/nufchistor...cerecords.shtml

Wouldn't mind a bit of a Stevie rant here, as i've got a few mates having a go because of it!

Don't let them wind you up mate. As you know the likes of TB, mesel and others you know never used to miss ever. We got relegated in 88/89, came bottom was just after we'd sold Gazza, and in the space of 4 year we'd got rid of the three best players in the country, Gazza, Beardsley and Waddle. They all wanted to stay but had to leave because of the lack of ambition and new signings. The first season we were down was 89/90, first season of Quinn and McGhee, and this is honestly this I was only 12 but I remember it vividly, the first game of the season was against Leeds and on the way to the ground there were hundreds of blokes with USFC t shirts on basically outright abusing us for going in. There was an official boycot, and we got so much stick "McKeag lovers". The bloke who sits next to me now he's 47, looks aboot 57 mind, he told me and I can't remember this there were 10,000 people at rallies in Social Clubs all over the city that Leeds game with speeches against Gordon McKeag, he admits though that they were all fucked off when they heard we'd beat Leeds 5-2 (the favourites to go up) and Quinn got 4.

So that was the crack. Anyway the average gate wasn't 16,000, was about 23,000, but at the end of the season we lost 0-2 at home to the mackems in the play off semi final, worst night ever honestly I cried all the way home, and to make matters worse the mackems lost the play off final against Swindon, but still went up because of a Swindon betting scam (ironically against the toon).

So the next season even your floating voter was fucked off, the boycot was still on, and we were even worse on the pitch, the football that season was THE worst I've seen in my lifetime, me and the lads still went but most other people jacked it and joined the boycott. I tell you how bad it was we lost 3-0 home and away to Notts County, and I remember the crowd cheering our own player Mark Stimson's sending off. The whole point of the boycot was to force McKeag out and get The Magpie Group in, which was obviously headed by Sir John Hall. In the end because of our boycot (the ave gate was 17,000 not 16) Hall got control and we kicked on from there. Anyone who has the audacity to criticise Newcastle fans on this is a fuckin arsehole mate, they were the worst of times, the highlight of going to the match was the hot dog and onions at the end of the game, the odd streaker, and the Indian noise bloke in the East Stand.

I'd for forgotten all about him. He just disapeared one seaon!

I must be about the same age as you mate and I have to say I can't really remember too much about the protests at all. I remember there was a lot of people stayed away back then and Sack the Board chants were common place but I can't remember too much else. I do remember the Leeds game and how good Quinn and John Gallagher looked (shame he picked up that injury because he looked like he would turn out a star!) but can't remember too much more from them days. Fortunately I was on holiday in Florida when the played the scum so it doesn't stick with me a much. Watching the Boro game on the big screen on the last day of the season sticks with me like.

What age are yee like mate? 31-33? The sack the board chants happened even in 88 that's when I really started noticing it. I remember we won 2-1 at Anfield one week, the next we were 0-3 down at home to Coventry at half time, and someone in the Gallowgate started singin sit down sit down to the tune of Play up Pompey, then everyone joined in and next thing you know the entire Gallowgate was sitting down on the terraces, was amazing, you think the amount of pisses people had on them terraces and there's 15,000 sitting down having a sit down protest. Fuck knows what good it was supposed to do, about the same as younguns turning up at 12 on Saturday to sing Ashley is a FC etc..

34 mate. My memory is shite but sack the board chants just seemed to go on for years to me. It just seemed like the norm then.

That Liverpool game was my first ever away game. Wasn't Macfaul sacked after that Coventry game? It's quite ironic that that season was probably the only time I can remember the old board spending any money witth Bessant, Thorne, Hendrie and (the massive success that was) John Robertson all coming in.

Aye. See that Liverpool game me granda who died before a was born used to be head signalman at The Toon Central, which meant me nana had 16 free rail journeys anywhere for the rest of her life every year, and she took me to London that day cos the oldies used to be mad for Harrods in them days. Was only about 10, and I remember it cos on the way home all I could think about was how the toon went on at Anfield, and this bloke got on the train at Doncaster with a green paper like wor "Pink"* and I asked him if I could have a read to see what the score was. Looked straight at the back page and there it was LIVERPOOL 1 NEWCASTLE 2, I couldn't fuckin believe it, I screamed the train down and me nana went mental kicking off with me. Liverpool were the best side in the world at the time don't care what no one said, they felt 100 times more invincible than any of them do now. LIVERPOOL 1 NEWCASTLE 2. The thing was being a good catholic boy, I prayed to god that if we were to win, I'd go to church every week, did I fuck go but it was magic that. Especially when you seen what happened Mirandinha kissing his badge in front of The Kop with a late pen.

The next game we played West Ham and Colin Suggett was in charge and that was to be me first away game cos me sis had just moved to Uni doon London, she was to meet me and me dad off the train at Kings Cross, but our train turned up 3 hours late was 255 by the time we got to Kings Cross, I cried all the way doon. Good old British Rail.

You're reet re them signings, but we sold Gazza for £2m which killed a lot of fans, Goddard for about £500k and Neil McDonald for £600k, and all they did was reinvest that, they didn't spend a penny. Jokers.

A cynic might say the Beardsley money was invested in the stand, and the money we made in the summer of 88 was used on the players I mention in the post above.

Aye it was an amazing day like, you're right they were seemingly invincible at the time and from memory (like I say mine is shite like) we totally outplayed them on the day and were thoroughly worthy winners.

Properly kicked off after the game in stanley park too. Fuck off knives and bottles all over the place, I was scared for life at the time.

That puts another spanner in the myth that Newcastle and Liverpool fans have always got on. It used to be nicknamed Stanley Knife Park for a good reason, to my knowledge toon fans have NEVER resorted to such low tactics. The only time I saw anything like it was the day of the 5th anniversary of Hillsborough and a toon fan walked on to the pitch at the end and placed a black and white wreath on the pitch which got applause from all four corners of the ground, even though we murderered them 0-2. I'm sure LM, or some other more travelled toon fan mentioned the fact that when we played them in the 74 Cup Final, the dippers and toon fans were fighting all day even on Wembley Way.
