McFaul 35
I don't think you can call them our main rival, a "derby" of sorts when they play (not that i take much from the world rankings) but we're 18th, they're 103rd with even macedonia above them. Like ewerk said fair play to some of the lads for sticking it out but if you think it's all rosey and the majority of it still doesn't go on you're crazy. Sure they were fined again last year for the bigoted chanting, the bigger sections of the support just don't have it in them to knock it on the head, which in this day and age is sad. i've said it before going to a game in the south has far less "aggro" about it. It's alright saying they're far behind you in the rankings, but it's not too long ago they were well, well, well above you, you were 60th and they 30th, them beating England and Spain, you losing 5-2 to Cyprus so there's no point getting snobby about them. ewerk 30765
He certainly doesn't support England, and laughs when we're shite. How do you know definitively what his starting eleven is? In a squad of 23 players. Six English, two Northern Irish, and one Scottish. Unbelievable that. Well he's on record saying that he's supporting England in the Euro's, while wanting us to lose every game. And I know what his starting XI is because he has told the media what it is. McFaul 35
this is embarrassing Yeah those were great results Stevie, what did they qualify for when that happened again? oh aye nothing, and it sent them flying up the rankings you're right, and then when normal service was resumed they've plummeted back down. consistency is a bit different to two games, but that's neither here nor there, the main points you've been making have nothing to do with the above and are so wide of the mark, this is about the only thing on here i ever clash with you on Stevie, but honestly you've really no clue. If a player decided to go from playing for the republic to playing for the north do you think he'd get the same vitriol that Gibson or Mclean received? would they fuck. These are the topics that are best discussed by the people who have experienced it frankly. "Normal service resumed". Ant you're not Brazil, you're not even fuckin England. It's fair to say Northern Ireland's tournament highs, are as high as ROI's are. Beating Spain in Madrid, at their own World Cup eclipses anything the ROI have ever done imo. That's why I'm puzzled as to why you're so condescending about them. They've had long periods when they've been better than Ireland. The Steve Staunton era being one, and also the mid 70's to the mid to late 80's. When the fuck would a player from ROI decide to play for Northern Ireland ffs. There's nee prods there for starters, and aye they'd be disowned.
ewerk 30765
Stevie, there's an excellent series of documentaries on Irish football called Green is the Colour that has recently been aired on RTE. They're available online, I honestly think that you'd enjoy them and it would give you a much better perspective on Irish football.
McFaul 35
I'll watch those shows some time Ewerk, but do you not think Northern Ireland fans have a right to be pissed off that they can nurture and pay for players to develop through their own system only to see players stolen by the ROI because of the Good Friday Agreement? Do you see their point of view?

Do you see their point of view? Absolutely, as I've said, you should play for the country you're born in. The GFA should not be used to allow NI players to opt for the Republic. I also believe that the granny rule should be done away with. The only players that any country should be able to select are those who are born within their borders. But it's a two-way thing. You can blame the players for opting for the Republic but you also have to blame those fans who have not been willing to change their mentality to make Windsor Park more welcoming to Nationalist / Catholic players. I've a lot of respect for the likes of Paddy McCourt who have chosen to play for NI but if NI fans want to stop losing players to the Republic then it them who have to change. The IFA have done a bit but more needs to be done. Banning any flag from Windsor Park that isn't the NI flag and changing the anthem from GSTQ would show that the IFA are serious about combating bigotry. Well my understanding is that the bigotry at Windsor Park has improved markedly since the days of Neil Lennon. McCourt is a bit of a hero to them. I partly agree with your belief that you should be born in a country to play for them, but I think direct parentage should be allowed to. I mean the classic case is Terry Butcher, as English as they come, his fatha was stationed in Singapore for a year and he was born there.
ewerk 30765
It is better but the bigotry is still there. As I said, the IFA have made efforts but they need to go further. People like myself aren't going to start actively supporting NI now but hopefully my kids will be able to when they get into football. And of course exceptions can still be made for the likes of players born abroad because their parents were in the army but broadly speaking, the rules need to be tightened. I'd also like to see international managers required to only represent their country of birth. It's supposed to be a national game based on the footballing resources of each country. Howmanheyman 33402
Just out of interest, what National anthem would Ant/Ewerk suggest gets played at Windsor Park for NI games? If a an Ulster Catholic feels like playing for NI then that would be good but how many would just rather play for the country they feel more part of and which might be welcomed more by their families and friends as much as perceived prejudice by a section of NI's support? PaddockLad 17363
Cant see what you posted...no youtube access at work Point is, the rugby side represents all Ireland, and they play some tune before the games start...Ant or Ewerk will know if its likely to be accepted by both err "camps" if it was suggested they could use it before games at Windsor Park. Rightly or wrongly, the offfical national anthemn of N.I. is GSTQ and the majority won't want a change from that. And as Ewerk says, its poor that lads brought up in N.I. plump for the Republic, pleased to see our own Fergie stuck with N.I.

Howmanheyman 33402
See this is the thing, they need to make one really same way Wales/Scotland etc do, as an alternative. (i really don't get the whole god save the queen anthem even for England, you'd think you'd want something a bit more aimed at the country and it's people/spirit rather than a song aimed at a monarch) But Northern Ireland don't have something like flower of scotland etc, either due to the politics or just sheer laziness What they did for the rugby is made a new anthem "Ireland's call" but the rugby is a unified team so it mentions all the provenances, so there is precedent for making one even now. The North needs to move on and create some new identity to get away from all the shite that gets tied into the bigotry, the flags/anthems/colours are a big part of that I can see your point but what do you think the reaction would be if GSTQ were to be pulled because it upset some of the population who don't even support Northern Ireland? In fact, to spin it on it's head, do you think the National anthem of Eire, 'The Soldiers Song' should be scrapped to something less martial? What would the Irish reaction be? GSTQ is a piss poor anthem but it's what we have in England and N Ireland and if a Labour PM declared that he was going to scrap it so that Britons of different faiths and Socialists who don't believe in the Monarchy would feel better about living in England then I think it would go down like a lead balloon. Unfortunately National Anthems tend to be a bit about measuring cocks, (Scotland sing about sending the English, 'Edward's Army' 'home tae think again'. Maybe we should scrap them all and start again. I agree with PL, 'Land of my Fathers' is the best British/Irish anthem by a country mile.
