Recommend me a 5-a-side league to join

Thinking of entering a team in a 5 or 6 a side league. Would prefer to avoid the usual suspects of powerleague etc as I already play up at North Shields on a Tuesday night and at £6 a game I would prefer to find something a little cheaper for my own teams games.

I live in Ryton but can travel so if anyone knows of any leagues please can you let me know?

Am happy with any surface and any venue.

The Pitz used to be mint, but we chucked it about 4 years ago cos the pitches were fucked up. Apparently it's better now though and there's a 7 a side league there. It's just beside Dunston flats, easy to get to for you. Eldon Rec is cheap too but the games are only 10 mins each way, really, really intense though. I'll turn out for you if you're short we've jacked it till late January so am gaggin for a game.

You can play 30 mins for fairly cheap in some Eldon leagues now, they started extending it due to competition. Being one of those rare breed who actually enjoys playing in goal I've whored myself around various leagues and I do find Eldon still the best for me..maybe I'm just more used to it. They are all much of a much though really, although I have to say I'm finding that a lot of these new fancy astro turf leagues to have excellent pitches and facilities but piss poor standard of refereeing. The Powerleague at Shields especially.

Cheers mate, yeah i've considered the Pitz, dont think its overly cheap though and i'm not keen on spending another £6 to play footy... am I right in thinking its about £35 a game?

Probs wont have the team up and running till end of Jan tbh but gimme a shout nearer the time if you're still looking for a game.

I considered Eldon but i'm presuming there's no where to park for free? Thats a consideration I haeve to make as everyone needs to travel to get to the matches.

Haha you're bang on about the Shields one!!! We've even had one of the refs stood texting on his phone whilst the match is going on instead of watching what was happenng. There's a couple of decent ones in all fairness but most are fuckin useless!

So you're a keeper? Are u looking for a team as its the one position I'm struggling to find.

Have you thought about starting up a Sunday League team? Better crack, better players, better for your fitness?

Depends who you play for. I've played for teams where the crack was better than the football due to a really good set of lads, but the otherside of the coin is I've played for teams filled with wanks as well. The last eleven a side team I played for full time had about two or three cliques, lots of bitching. I wouldn't say 11 a side is better for your fitness too, 40 minutes 5 aside wrecks me more than 11s. Once you're in your late 20's early 30's too, it's ok in summer till October, but even when I was scoring 30 and 40 a season I hated playing from November till March because it was so fucking cold. Also you can get away with playing hungover when you're younger but not when you're knocking on a bit, but luckily for you because of your lifestyle that isn't an issue for you. I would take issue with better players too, define better calibre of player. I've played with some utterly shit eleven a side players, and 5 a side players with amazing touches.

Nah tbh it'd be too much hassle. The reason i'm looking for a league is that I organise 5-a-side at Newcastle College on a Thursday night, but i've been really struggling to find 10 people recently to play, so i'm thinking it'll be easier just to enter a team in a league and have less hassle.

 Was he scruffy with long hair??? Surfer dude we call him. We had so many issues with him. He's on record as saying he hates me, and the feelings mutual, if it's the same one because I tell him straight what a mug he is.

There's loads of places to park free in town mate, try the cathedral car park opposite the central, only 5 mins walk from there.

Haha aye thats the dude!!! We ended up putting a complaint in against him as he was just so shit lol! He's been alright since then in all fairness but still seems to switch off at points during the game which is canny annoying!

Ahh ok i'll look in to the parking for eldon, is it indoors on wooden floors still? Not played there in many a year.

We've had this argument before  On the flip side I played with a lad who could beat 5 men on a 5 a side and bend it in the corner. I saw the same lad on a full size pitch get snapped in half after 30 seconds for holding on to the ball and struggle to hit a shot on target from outside the 6 yard box!

Theres a ref in our league who is the spit of Lua Lua. We played last month one of our players curled a lovely dead ball in to the back post. Our CB ran from 5 yards onside, round their defender and put a bullet header into the net. The ref blew his whistle and ruled it out. We asked what the hell for and he said . . . and I quote!!!

The player moved before I blew my whistle

Complete Football at Gosforth race course is canny (and there's parking)!

Yeah i've played there before, good facilities but a little pricy tbh.

Played a tournament there summer before last, got knocked out like true english men in the semi's on penalties :D

Parking is free after 6pm in the majority of car parks in toon now. I have to say as much as we have run ins with them now and again, the standard of refereeing is excellent in Eldon. I never really noticed it until I started playing in other leagues and saw how bad it was. I think with any 5/6 a side league it all depends on the standard of opposition. If you're getting stuffed every week then it's no fun, if you're stuffing everyone then it's no fun, and if you're getting the shit kicked out of you by knackers every week then it's no fun. Need to find the right balance.

Yeah defo... my biggest gripe about leagues is knackers who take it far too seriously and just kick you off the park all match, you get them where ever you go, but there's certainly more than a fair share at certain venues.

Eldon sounds like a decent suggestion then so i'll bare it in mind

I used to play for a team at the rec when I was 16-21, called Youngs. There was four divisions on a Thursday night we were always in the first all our team were mid 30s (crack was brilliant), and the standard was the best I've ever played in. There was a ref called Trevor, is he still there (?). He got sacked but reinstated after he broke a players nose who happened to be a male model for calling him a tool :D he was a right twat though this Trevor.

We've been laughing the last couple of years at some of the young uns who've started teams. You can tell they are the Sky generation, diving around trying to win free kicks, kicking the ball away to waste time, holding onto the ball when the give away a free kick then tossing it away casually like they're Rooney or something..it's fucking hilarious.. :D

:icon_lol: How times have changed. The lads I played with were all rough building site types, I love them to bits even though they're like 48+ now, and they used to take the piss out of teams who wore shinpads :D

I used to play in that league, about 5 years ago. I played with some right tossers like. We went from the 4th to the 1st in successive seasons but then when we got to the 1st it was full of older guys who'd played together for years who just fucking owned the division. We got a couple of whippings and the tossers from my team didn't like the fact they were out of their depth and started getting mysterious long term injuries so we pulled out. Me and another lad from the team moved to another night with some lads we knew and that core team has stayed.

Trevor is still there and even though he can be a right tosser he tends to be alreet in the main. Doesn't take any shite and books people whinging and persistant fouling, which is something a lot of refs won't do.

I used to get booked once every 3 games off him for moaning and the rule then was if you got booked you missed the next game.

There was a player called little Tony in that first division, he was the best i've ever seen at step overs, you knew exactly what he was going to do but he did you every time.

We always find the older lads harder to play against than the young uns. Lads who've played together for years are so well organised and know exactly how to play it. We're starting to get a bit like that now we're all in our 30's, we're not brilliantly technically but we're well organised and we tend to always beat young uns who might be excellent footballers and pacey but are shite as a unit.

Totally the same with us, we were about to win the first division down North Shields before we chucked it. I used to be so greedy, literally I'd get the ball off our keeper beat the whole team and score, or lose it, the lads used to put up with it though cos I'd win games on me own without sounding big headed. When I got to mid 20s I started getting a football brain, and now 30's I have to play like that because I can't do all the work anymore, let the ball do the work is the right saying in football. It's a shame I didn't have a football brain when I was in my teens, had all the ability apart from letting the ball do the work.
