Is the PL basically crap?

AXED West Ham assistant boss Zeljko Petrovic has labelled the Premier League 'c**p'.

He was sacked yesterday - and now manager Avram Grant has three league games to save his job at rock-bottom Hammers.

In a scathing attack Montenegran Petrovic said: "Everybody has great words for the Premier League but it is a myth.

"The Premier League is a crap league, it is nothing. In truth the level is shocking. Every team has just three good players. If you take those players out of the teams then there are only players left who would not be playing in the bottom team in Holland.

"The Bundesliga is far better."

of course it isn't crap. it's probably in the top two or three in europe when you look at the quality of the top teams. probably not among europe's best when it comes to competitiveness mind.

Are there not three or four teams who can legitimately claim they could win the League and who could go toe to toe with all but the Madrid's and Barce's of Europe?

I'd fancy Spurs and Arsenal even against the likes of Marseille and Milan

I think people like to bash their own league, a Spanish friend of mine is constantly saying La Liga is a two team league and apart from the obvious two there's no teams of any quality compared to even the likes of Everton/Villa etc.

As far as I'm concerned the EPL is as good as any of them, maybe 3 or 4 of the top 5 players in the world play in Spain but I reckon there's a lot more good players on the whole in the EPL. Hard to choose between the two league. The German and Italian leagues are way off imo.

It depends how you define crap.

There is a trade off between excitement and technique, and since before the beginning of time our football has extolled the virtues of effort and commitment over them fancy dan foreigners with their technical ability, tactical awareness and boring football.

The undoubted commercial success of the premier league, and the ensuing import of quality foreign players, has allowed the claim of the best league in the world to have some basis in fact - but also allowed the false belief that home grown players were "world class" to become widespread.

English players still are way behind tactically and technically, and now the imports aren't actually the very best any more the English teams will start to fall away in Europe is my guess.

Apart from the odd aberration English teams still really don't know how to defend, Mourinho's Chelsea with Carvalho as the brains being the best example I can think of. This leads to a load of goals and excitement, mistakenly promoted as great attacking play, when in reality the majority of players just don't know how to defend or tackle

The Shawcross tackle that broke Ramseys leg summed it up for me. The whole debate was whether it was intentional, was he malicous or just whole hearted etc, with the concensus being it was just one of those unavoidable, unlucky things. He said something along the lines of I won't change the way I play, and was praised for his courage and determination. Taking Man and ball is still considered something to be encouraged, but in reality its physicality being preferred to technique.

However though there is something exciting about seeing a full blooded challenge, it certainly gets the crowd going and can energise players and fans alike.

Is the Premier League crap, if you care about being able to tackle properly, being able to defend, if the most important thing is technique and tactical awareness then yes it is pretty crap. England will forever be shown up and embarresed in International competition until our whole attitude to the game changes. If you want exciting football with big tackles loads of goals, and now that our richest teams aren't monopolising the best players in the world, a league where anybody can ibeat anybody, then no English football isn't crap, its much more entertaining than its continental counterpart.

I couldn't really give a Fuck about England winning anything anyway - so fuck off back to Yugoslavia you moaning twat

Aye, I agree. What I meant before was that the top two teams, i.e. Chelsea and Man Utd aren't the sides they were 2-3 seasons ago. The chasing pack aren't that great either (although I've been very impressed with Spurs in Europe tbf). The league itself is much less boring than it's been for some time however.

I would say mid-2000s it was boring to watch..everyone trying to cancel each other out..from what I've seen so far there are far more teams willing to have a go than there was. Saying that, this might also have something to do with our fall from grace. Teams used to turn up here and play for the draw therefore killing the game, now we're seen as a very achievable 3 points teams come here more confident.

Its the most open PL season ever. So what if the standard is crap. Its great viewing.

I totally agree, that's what I was getting at. It desperately needed shaking up.

I dont really have an affinity with any of la ligas players (eg I hate Rob Greens face and like it when he drops a clanger etc etc) so i'd prefer to watch the PL as its more personal to me.

I can imagine the standard of football is probably better though (less people like Karl Henry clattering people anyway)

Obviously I'm bothered in terms of the impact results have on NUFC. I still like watching the PL but I think say, a mid-table La Liga game is more entertaining (to me) than Blackburn v Everton. I know what you mean though.
