Barton, Nolan and even Butt possibly did more than he did in terms of dressing room influence. Not sure why you're singling him out for special praise in this context. He put himself about a bit, which I appreciate helped our cause, but in terms of end product he did next to nothing. I feel for him because he's not been the same since his leg break. Once Guthrie got in the central midfield as well, he was mint (easy enough when you've got a few seconds to pick a pass out every time you get the ball like) and Carroll and Lovenkrands powered us through the spring. Crediting Smith with a decent hand in galvanising the dressing room seems fair if you read the articles from the time and since but on the pitch, he was fairly inconsequential.
