In today's Guardian, Dutch are looking to restrict use of coffee shops to just Dutch citizens. Not clear on how but they want to stop tourists using them.

The government are or the actual coffee shop owners? If it's the former, I'd be interested to know how.

never quite understood the attraction of the 2 nights in Amsterdam boat trips:

 

• spend the evening on the boat with pissed mongs.

• get to spend 3 to 4 hours in ’dam.

• back to the boat for return journey.

 

at least stay overnight in the city for one night!

Me neither... my mate suggested it... I was less than enthusiastic, especially as its only 1 hour on a plane!!

 

His explanation was that you could get pissed and have a laugh on the boat... my response was that I could do that in Amsterdam during the 30 hours I saved during the trip!

Despite his unflattering portrayal of the English, he did, however, take a stand against the Dutch government's proposal. "This is very fucked up," he said. "All these coffee shops will have to close."An employee at another famous coffee shop said: "They say it's to avoid criminality but it will create more criminality. If they can't go to coffee shops they will buy it from Dutch people on the streets. It's bullshit."

 

 

Don't know how you square something like this with the EC, but then the fact the Dutch are an anomoly and it's to do with drugs will probably mean they're not taken to task over it politically.

Totally agree, mind 3 or 4 nights is more than enough. Those boat trips are for scruffy reprobates, I mean for fuck sake 11 hours drinking on the ferry, you get there totally monged or hungover, have a swagger doon the Damrak then its time to go back. Pathetic. Makes me laugh why people do it. To enjoy it fly over, get wrecked one day, get a bike the next.

KLM are the only ones who go now from Newcastle I think. It's quite reasonable if you booked in advance but you can't get really cheap flights anymore since it's about £100 return for the taxes and charges alone. Much better than getting the ferry though.

I think because of the sex boom in Eastern Europe and cheap flights to places like Prague, the authorities in Amsterdam are trying to move away from being primarily known as a sex/drugs haven. I think it's fucking stupid commercially because every time I've been it feels like little England and the people who go aren't exactly your holiday in the Seychelles/Cayman Islands types so they'll lose a fortune long term. It's good in a way because there's so much more to Amsterdam than the debauchery nights. I was in Leidsesplein the night they beat Czech Republic in their opening game of Euro 2000, it was one of the best nights out I've ever had, every fucka, and I mean everyone was in orange, the houses decorated orange, lasses with orange faces and not a scouse bird in sight.

 

I absolutely love Holland it's a fuckin great country, even Eindhoven was amazing I thought, the birds are all fit as fuck, and the dutch themselves have an arrogance, identity and self belief on a par with the English. If they're moving away from the seedy reputation it's not entirely a bad move although it will cost them.

Those sorts of tourists don't spend that much money though Stevie. That's why the Dutchies are doing it. You know how prgamatic they are. They've looked into it and the stag dos etc. are hardly worth the bother. You're right though, there has been a steady move to make it more 'upmarket'.

Aye between £100 & £125 depending on how early you book it.

 

I think Durham Tees might be flying someone like Jet 2 to there but probs wouldn't save you much money when you take in to account parking etc

Jet2 used to fly from Newcastle. I would imagine they still go from Leeds/Bradford as that's their HQ I think. Not sure about Tees/Durham but either are a pain in the arse. You'd actually struggle to find cheaper than KLM anyway, notwithstanding the extra hassle of flying from elsewhere, as the taxes have gone up so much over the past few years.
