McFaul 35
If that's what you took from my post its a shame. I'll simplify: longevity is not the goal. My grandma died a couple of months back at the age of 103. She spent the last few years with a very low quality of life. I think, given the choice, she might have traded off those last few years for an extra few years earlier in her life with better mobility or ability to enjoy life. Sure, a long life full of joy, family and friendships is what we all want. However, the idea that longevity does not come at the expense of foregone pleasure is a nonsense. When I see cooking posts saying 'yummy I just had brown rice & mungo bean bake, topped with a delicious carrot rapé and non-oil based dressing' I think aye, sounds alright but if you think that's 'yummy' then you need a tour of European restaurants with me. That tour will not be good for longevity. Wine, red meat, cheese etc all come with a trade off. The point being the best things in life are not free but you've got to find a balance. One element of that balance is not being a boring cunt who talks endlessly about their gym visits. That is the sort of person who turns up at a party and talks about the drive there and the parking. This person may live longer but is ultimately wasting the planet's oxygen resources. A lot less thinly veiled than your normal abuse. There's some truth in it. I spend much more time on my body than I ever used to. My lifestyle used to be football 3 times a week, pissed 5 times a week, eat shite, smoke, the odd line or joint or pill. Now I'm older it's gym 4 or 5 times a week, biking, and eat what I want within reason, pissed twice a week. Anyone that counts calories too much should pipe down and enjoy life more. When I see a second chin coming I step up my exercise. Anyway that's my bible of fitness. Do your exercise and enjoy your life, and keep abusing your body as much as you can till you stop getting away with it.
Gemmill 46905
Ditto the assumption that healthy food has to be boring or tasteless.
ChezGiven 0
The best foods are not that healthy. We eat a lot fresh fruit and salads (well over the summer months when its in season) and love them, healthy foods are lush but the best things tend not to be. I live with a French woman ffs, our diet is uber healthy.
JawD 99
Totally agree Gemmill I eat well. I eat steak, cheese & curry but its just not every day any more. Chez is right in thats its about balance. Trouble is most want to have their cake and eat it (excuse the pun). I know the calories I eat roughly but I have the knowledge to do so, its a hobby almost. But because I do that and enjoy the gym doesnt mean I do fuck all else. Thankfully my wife is an excellent cook and recently trained as a personal trainer, so she looks in to cooking healthy meals for us and is brilliant at it. I've had curries I'd never have thought of eating and she is making a beef stew tonight. Everything fresh with meat, veg and herbs. Like Gemmill says, eating healthy doesnt have to be salad and crated carrot (which on its own wouldnt be that healthy

Olives, brilliant source of good fats, fucking rank Unhealthy food isnt really black and white though, it just need to be taken in to account. Park Life 71
Still marvel at the way gymming was sold to the masses as a panacea for everything. It probably makes almost no difference to your longevity compared to sensible eating and genes.
Gemmill 46905
Depends what your view of healthy is. I eat next to no sugar or processed shit and the missing calories I replace with fat which tastes class. So I'll have cream or peanut butter or leave the skin on chicken like a normal person or whatever. I just had puy lentils in lemon and olive oil, spinach and roasted cherry tomatoes with honey and garlic for lunch. Which would register highly on your boredom meter but which tasted class. Considering the amount of 60 year olds I ferry round to and from replacement knee surgery, I think this younger gym generation will be replacing all sorts of body parts in their 50's

That's a fair point. I go every year but just Apr and May....I've got the kind of personality that it would take over if I kept it up... I do notice feeling more positive even if I have a longish walk.

I do notice feeling more positive even if I have a longish walk. this is how it took over my life. i have an addictive personality. my vice in my twenties was getting going out and getting spangled. not as much leeway for that sort of behaviour in mid 30s with a kid. i found regular exercise kind of plugs the gap, in a weird way. Dr Gloom 22436
...plus it's satisfying to lose the love handles and beer gut. in my 20s i could eat and drink whatever the fuck i wanted and never put on fat. now i have to exercise like a beast just to stay the same. slowing metabolism is a bitch. A load of fruit with cream on for a dessert is both relatively healthy and tastes class. I wasn't suggesting you live on processed food.
