The Newcastle Jets have today signed former England International Francis Jeffers for a 10 match stint with the club as its designated Guest Player, with 5 of those being at home at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle.

Jeffers has a wealth of English Premier League experience having played with such prestigious clubs as Everton (49 appearances), Arsenal (22 appearances) and Sheffield Wednesday (54 appearances). He also played for England against Australia in 2003, scoring a goal for the English when beaten by the Socceroos in a 3-1 defeat at Upton Park, London.

A renowned goal scorer, Jeffers has scored over 30 goals in the English Premier League. He was also the all time leading scorer for England U21s with 13 goals, a record he shares with Alan Shearer.

The Newcastle Jets anticipate that Jeffers will contribute greatly to the teams ability to score goals. He comes to the club as a specialist striker and offers the club an ace in the front line.

Executive Chairman Ken Edwards expressed his delight in snaring the talented goal poacher, "Francis is a player of immense talent who has graced the English Premier league with success and comes to the Jets at a time when he is on the right side of thirty and hungry to showcase his abilities on the Hyundai A-League stage. We are excited about the prospect of seeing Francis forming a focal point of our attack and exploiting the goal-scoring opportunities that may come his way".

Newcastle Jets head coach, Branko Culina stated, "We are excited to have him on board, he is a player with great pedigree who has played at a high level and we hope his experience and knowledge will rub off on many of our younger players."

Jeffers said today on his signing "I like what is happening with the Club. It is an exciting period here and hopefully I would be able to assist the Jets to climb up the ladder during my time here. The lads and everybody at the Club has been great and made me feel welcome from the time I landed and I cant wait to get going".

It is anticipated that Jeffers will be available to play for the Newcastle Jets when the team plays against Adelaide United at Energy Australia on Saturday 13th November.

The bit underlined, well what can I say maybe they can get a PR job with Ashley

IIRC that result sent a fragile relationship between Blaydon and Li3nZ into full scale meltdown on here.

Jeffers was Robson's 1st choice iirc and he went for Bellamy instead when the former joined Arsenal. Shows that you need a bit of luck no matter who you are as a manager.

The players Wenger has unearthed as well down the years just makes that Jeffers signing all the more bizarre. Couldnt imagine a more unlikely saviour than Arsene in ensuring we avoided that complete waste of money.

Think he was after someone to just stick it in the back of the net. He looked a canny player alongside Kevin Campbell as well tbf. Funny signing all the same though, as you point out.
