sammynb 3640
I was having a conversation the other day about certain guitarists and how they are associated with a certain guitar, like Angus Young and a Gibson SG, BB King and "Lucille" which is a 355 Gibson. So far I've come up with the following list and I'm trying to avoid Strats and Les Pauls because everyone plays one: Fender Telecaster: Albert Lee Frank Black PJ Harvey Keith Richards Fender Jazzmaster: Elvis Costello Tome Verlaine J Mascis Adam Franklin Kevin Shields Robert Smith (also famous for Fender VI) Gibson Explorer: James Hetfield the edge Gibson SG: Angus Young Ed Kuepper Gibson Melody Maker: Joan Jett Rickenbacker: Susanna Hoff The Smithereens The Libertines Roger McGuinn Paul Weller that chick from Roxette Any other suggestions? sammynb 3640
Seeing this has fallen flat, the question is who would you like to ask why they play the instrument they do?

AgentAxeman 199
has anyone mentioned Malmsteen and Strats?
Billy Castell 0
And are there many famous guitarists who just pick up a variety of guitars, and don't have a particular 'favourite'?
JonGoodwyn 1
Sammy was trying to avoid Strats and Les Pauls 'cos so many people play them, but Malmsteen was one of the first I thought of when it came to Iconic guitars/players along Eric Clapton, Slash and David Gilmour etc. There are quite a few people who have played a lot of different make and models of guitar, or have changed a lot through there are career. First that come to mind are Alex Lifeson, Shawn Lane and to a degree Kirk Hammett although there are a fair amount more too

The guy has half a dozen signature guitars through ESP but still plays his Explorer as his main axe. Tom Petty plays all sort and although best known for Rickenbackers, is also famous for playing other geetars and if was nailed down to "that" guitar would probably point to his acoustic. sammynb 3640
Nice one. Was it Ace Freely or Paul Stanley that played the Gibson Flying V? Edited November 4, 2010 by sammynb

JonGoodwyn 1
Nice one. Was it Ace Freely or Paul Stanley that played the Gibson Flying V? Ace plays Les Pauls pretty much exclusively, as far as I know, but Paul plays a lot of different guitars - I think his V's are Washburns these days but he definitely played a Gibson Firebird back in the 70's, probably a flying V as well. maggiespaws 0
Its surprising who play's tele's given that they seem to be the strat's poor(er) cousin. Even the boys from Quo are noted for their tele preference. Having played (but don't own) one - I have this unerring desire for one - but can't quite place WHY. I just do. I think some guitarists aspire to be, using their guitar choice; whereas others inspire and their choice is secondary and influenced by a quest for a certain sound. I'll go as far as to include myself in that. Started off playing a strat 'cos Clapton played one and in fairness; I probably play a Les Paul 'cos Page, Slash and a couple of my other hero's play(ed) them. As I've gotten older I guess I've grown to understand them differently and appreciate (read understand) the different sounds and why I like them. Back on topic - my contribution is Iommi and the SG 108. Him and Angus might have the association because of the horns, but that's secondary. I believe it's down to the width of the neck and the pickup sound. Noel Gallagher plays an Epiphone ES-355, not a Gibson one. I'd agree he's eponymous for the Union Jack one (although he plays a few) - but he also favours a Std Les Paul for many tracks also; so I'm not convinced which is his preferred choice. maggiespaws 0
Nice one. Was it Ace Freely or Paul Stanley that played the Gibson Flying V? It was also Steve Howe's guitar of choice for a while IIRC. Fuck me why I remember this shit and less about more recent guitarists (of whom I like) .... Ah cool, I didn't know that - cheers. That scene in Spinal Tap always makes me think of Paul Gilbert He has an outrageous amount of guitars, but I can't find a picture that shows all of them in one place (about 1:40 in)That's nowhere near all of them though, there's a nice picture of him with big wall-to-wall rack full of different colour PGM's but I can't find it
