Kitman 2207
QANTAS in recent years have spent a fortune repairing a couple of planes that have come unstuck because they wanted to keep their "never written off an aircraft" record. That said their service is shite, a lot of their fleet needs updating and they're expensive. Qantas has a very bad rep here in NZ. Plus bits have fallen off their arcraft on a regular basis over the last 3 years. I was once coming back from Melbourne and they delayed the plane for 4 hours; their attitude was basically "fuck off and find something to do, we'll call you when we're ready". As it happens the delay was due to a passenger taking ill (apparently) but they didn't give a shit about the passengers left wondering when they'd get home, it was like flying with a hyper expensive Ryan Air. I wouldn't fly with them again if I can help it. the point is they have a very good record on not crashing we'll not talk about Impact Erebus to a kiwi.................. Oof. I'm not a Kiwi btw. You sound a bit touchy about Qantas, you don't work for them do you?
Guest WDP
As I understand it the chances of being involved in a plane crash are about 1 in 1,000,000 (someone can sharpen up that stat if they know better) so stop being a massive girl and get on a fucking plane. Wonder what the odds of a train or car crash are, bet they're lower than being in an aircrash. I've been in a car crash like, really scary shit the noise is horrible, so god knows what it must be like in a plane.

It's a well known fact that qantas have repaired planes that their insurance company wanted to write off, the 747 that ran off the end of the runway in Bankok in 1999 being case in point. Then also take into account they have had three major incidents this year.

Rob W 0
"Dunno about safety record" Qantas has never had a single fatal jet airplane crash. In fact, Qantas has had only 2 safety incidents and no fatalities whatsoever since 1951 ANZ 's last revenue fatal was flight 901 at Erebus in 1971 but they also lost an A3200 in France on test in 2009 Of course Qantas don't have an ad like this one

Qantas's recent record is obviously a worry, notwithstanding there's been no fatalities. A core requirement of mine from an airline is not crashing but ideally bits of the aircraft wouldn't explode or fall off either. Erebus was a strange one, in that it seems to have been a trip for sightseeing in the South Pole and wasn't a typical commercial flight. The plane flew into the side of a mountain based on dodgy co-ordinates and poor visibility. The Air NZ management of the day were slaughtered about the episode but it seems to me that Air NZ is much better run these days.

I recently met the ex-marketing director of Air NZ at the time of Erebus. He told me they spent an absolute fortune on ads with Alan Whicker (who he described as the worst hypochondriac he'd ever met) around the slogan "Nobody Does it Better". It was scrapped when Erebus happened (and it was apparent most airlines did it better) and he was sacked shortly afterwards.
