His heart is definitely in it now, which is wasn't when we were relegated.

Loved his equaliser against Wigan.

The way he's one of the first to celebrate with whomever scores, just makes me grin like an idiot.

Mine too. So calm and controlled back there. Wins a lot of headers too, which he really struggled with last season in the pl. In particular, I think Carew gave him a good going over. Collo had him in his pocket in SJP last month and today he was taking the piss at times. Works well with Willo. When we signed Sol, I thought him and Saylor would be our 1st choice pairing at the back-no way should either of the current 2 be dropped though. His understanding with Ricky is hugely important too, IMO.

Definitely a good understanding as you say with Enrique, and a good partnership with Williamson, all we were lacking was a RB and as it stands Simpson has had an acceptable game at West Ham as he was just back in the first team, played well against the mackems and very well today.

Its no coincidence that with Perch out the team we've won 3 games and looked much more steady at the back, also helped by Barton replacing Routledge on that side as well. Before that teams could see we were hard to beat on the left with Enrique and Jonas' work rate, so they could hammer us down the right and we had little answer. Now we have some balance and hopefully Simpson will continue his form, because he needs to be at his best as most of us think he may struggle in the prem ultimately, but he's doing well so far.

Starting to see the point in Perch too. He's clearly 3rd choice RB and 5th choice centre back. Hughton gets the benefit of the doubt from me as every squad needs good lads who won't rock the boat and can cover a few positions.

surely a young lad would do that job. eg Kadar

I think that's a logical thing to do, a cheap utility player when our squad is short on numbers and we have little cash, but i can't help feeling Hughton was let down by Calderwood, he managed Perch so knows him very well, and he should have known his failings and known he was way below prem standard. I know Hughton will have checked him himself but i think he went with Calderwoods judgement here and has been lumbered with a player not good enough to be 3rd choice anything.

Well he couldn't cover RB and maybe Hughton wouldn't have wanted to play the kid there knowing Simpson was going to be out for a couple of months.

I do like the look of Kadar and Ferguson though. Hopefully they get a chance on loan.

Glad to see Ranger so close to 1st team action-he was slipping all over the shop today, but great to see CH rates him enough to throw him on with the game as it was.

I said in the match thread that he was outstanding and is finally living up to the pricetag.

I think his upturn in form is in part down to the fact he's had less to do this season than two seasons ago. Our midfield and full backs are all more solid, which is relieving the pressure on Colo.

I said the same, does Ranger not have access to normal boots or something! I think tbh he's one of those young players who's a bit over eager/energetic and at times is a bit too hectic and falls off balance or gets ahead of himself. But he had an impact today and can do plenty of times this season off the bench.

Tbh, that Arsenal defender(not going to attempt to spell it) could have left him go through, as he'd have probably fallen over.

Sensational technique for the overhead attempt, when a simple knock down to Nolan would have sufficed! Got confidence!

If I was the company providing Ranger's boots I'd have him cover the logo with black tape before every match. Ridiculous the amount of times he slips over!

Now onto Colo. His passing has been fantastic. Can pick out a midfield player nicely from the back time and time again. Wonderful technique for a central defender.

Wasn't his original contract a 5 year deal. This Summer [with potentially a season's worth of striking performances, to dilute his nightmare first season] would be the last opportunity for Ashley to seriously cash-in. Although it would be for a minimal profit, on Ashley's original investment/purchase price.

Much more disciplined now in the basics of defending, although it helps having a midfield not being overrun/offering some semblance of protection. Combined with his passing play [which has never been in doubt] this season is acting as a glimpse, preview or showcase, of what Colo could offer a top club/team.
