Bellamy is world class

Agree with the comments about Shearer like. In that period when we slipped from being CL qualifers / a top 4-5 side during and after the Souness debacle it was almost like that's all the club was about, i.e. Shearer getting the club goalscoring record. Any other 'top' side would've either replaced him completely or eased him into the background but he had far too much influence imo.

I remember the game against Everton in 02 where he scored one of Li Tie's* arse to win it. Shearer (rightly) got the headlines for his wonder-strike) but Bellamy's tireless performance won us that game. He hadn't been on the best run of goal-scoring form and when it went in, he sunk to his knees by the Corner with a look of vindication and relief on his cheeky face.

So many games he carved out the one or two chances Shearer needed to get us the win, just by winning a corner or a foul near the box.

Quality player and imo the kind of "football man" the game needs more of.

* I think it was him

I make it that in 245 appearances for premiership clubs he scored 73 goals? That's a conversion rate of about 30% which isn't really world class for a striker if we're being objective. I'm aware he's much more than scoring goals but his injuries and personality make it difficult to base a team around him imo. Would have been brilliant for us this season though.

I'd say in contrast that Giggs is, or was, world class. Pretty subjective though really, as has been said.

Ah, here's a thing. You know these days it seems fashionable to play with one fella up front and a couple mobile forwards hanging off him, If Bellamy was coming through now he'd be thought of, not as a "striker" but as (what I'm going to call) a wide forward.

Their jobs are not to score, that's for the Drogba's of the world, there's is to give him chances and bring the midfield into play.

No, I reckon his goal record can't be held against him.

His goal record counts more for him than against him imo for the type of player he is, i.e. not an out and out goalscorer (like Kevin Nolan :D ).

I've not been following his career since he left, but his lack of clinical precision when in front of goal was his worst quality on the pitch when he was at Newcastle, regardless of what type of player he was positionally.

Off the pitch, the number of clubs he has played for would indicate to me he has a toxic personality, I don't believe this 'he's just a passionate player' stuff personally.

Good player, undoubtedly, but world class? Not for me.

If you forget about the fact he's labelled a striker and if, instead, he was labelled a winger I think you'd think differently about him.

I know "World Class" is one of those phrases that divides people.

Does it mean that he's the best in his position? If so, then he's not.

Does it mean that he wouldn't look out of place in the great teams of the world? Then I would say he is. Incredible pace, top class first touch, great vision, a few tricks in his book, fearless, boundless endeavour, and a 1 in 3 strike record is very good for a midfielder.

if you stripped away his attitude off the pitch, his nationality, his odd hair-cut choices, and just looked as his attributes, I believe he would not have looked out of place at Man U, Real, Inter/AC.

It's a shame he never played at a world cup, I think his passion would have been a welcome counter-point to the France and England "stars" apathy.

This is all just garnish now Dave. You've made your accidental good point for the year so pipe down a bit, yeah?

He'd be world class if his finishing was better, end of. Can't believe so many people have forgotten how frustrating this was (eclipsed by Dyer, admittedly).

All this talk of world class players is making me think of Ameobi, when's his testimonial due?

Now, it's actually due now. You get Real Madrid here and the ground would still be half empty. Poor Shola, he'd get my twenty quid for all the abuse he's suffered down the years.

I love seeing players who do new things football like Hernandez header on Sunday, some of the tricks both Ronaldo's do and have done I've never seen, and the Cruyff turn was ground breaking, S Shola can claim one in that he developed that unique and almost unseen technique of scoring goals where the ball bobbles 20 times before going in. Never seen a footballer do it as consistently.

Bellamy, he's always been world class. (Spirit, Pace, Positioning, Expletives, Power, Finishing - He's got the lot, just a little tw*t who never got given credit for his skill with him being a Welsh journeyman)
