London firefighters to strike on Bonfire Night

Firefighters in London are to strike on Bonfire Night in a row over new contracts, their union has said.

The 47-hour action will be the third strike date since the Fire Brigades' Union (FBU) announced strike action.

It said the dispute centred on plans to scrap current rotas and force staff to sign new contracts or face the sack.

But London fire authority chairman Brian Coleman asked: "What sort of union orders its firefighters to go on strike over bonfire night?"

The FBU said thousands of its members will walk out from 1000 GMT on 5 November until 0900 GMT on 7 November.

Unbelievable. Dont these idiots realise that they need to keep the public on side. Strike if their is no alternative but bot on Bonfire night.

Are the fire brigade allowed to do a total walk out? Or is this just a refusal to put on extra staff on Bonfire Night?

Yes......It it gets really bad the army usually take over in the Green Godesses.

On this occasion the firemen who refuse to strike are manning some of the engines but as during the miners strike there is also sort of shit kicking off allegedly.

Just seen that there are private staff there to take over in the case of such an emergency, though only trained in basic firefighting.

What exactly is the big problem with going from a 15/9 shift to 12/12?

I suspect Rob is right in his suspicions it will interfere with their other jobs.

Not on Longbenton estate it's not.

Or on the countless London estates.

All those benefit scroungers will have just had their new sofas and 48 inch TV's delivered in time for xmas and there will old sofas and cardboard boxes all over the place.
