toughguymick@hotmail.co.uk 0
A NEW university sports centre has been granted a booze licence. Northumbria University launched the £30m Sport Central earlier this year, when it hosted Great Britain basketball team, who played FYR Macedonia. We told how campus chiefs then launched an application to serve alcohol and play live music on the premises until midnight. That led to families living nearby sending in letters of objection, saying their lives are already blighted by rowdy students. But Newcastle City Council’s licensing sub-committee granted the licence, subject to a series of conditions. Drinks can be served until midnight every day but sales to members of the public wanting to take booze off the premises must stop at 10pm. A second application had been lodged in relation to a coffee shop on the site, which was for the provision of recorded music from 7am until 11pm every day and the supply of alcohol from 10am until 11pm every day. The university withdrew the application for recorded music at the hearing and amended the hours for the sale of booze to 10am until 9pm every day. That was also allowed. The report that went before councillors included a number of letters of objection. One stated: “The sports centre is approximately 50 yards from my front door. “Customers, after drinking to 12 midnight, will leave the premises and walk past the front of my flat and those of other residents.” It added: “Worst still, because of the new pedestrianised area and provision of benches, many will decide to loiter late at night and in the early hours of the morning. “This will create a severe noise nuisance for me and other residents. This is based on experience of suffering noise nuisance for many years from students leaving the Northumbria University Students Union. “This will simply add to the problem.” Another said: “Since 2008 there have been very serious problems in this area. “During the freshers period in 2008, bottles were thrown off the footbridge causing police to have to close the central motorway. “Criminal damage was reported to the police and security staff, as windscreen wipers were torn off residents’ cars, students were seen jumping from car roof to car roof and bottles were thrown at our homes.” There are around 35 residential properties near to the Sport Central site.
